Picking a new truck
 

To be Honest:
I'm extremely new and ignorant to Diesel technology. I do understand the basics behind it, but the acronyms take me a bit of time to figure out. I've been buying every diesel magazine I can find and reading as many diesel forums as I can find, so be patient I'm really trying and hopefully learning as I go.
What I need:
I just purchased a new TT and the dry weight is 8200 lbs dry, Gross weight can be 11000 but 10000 would be more realistic. So I've decided it's HD truck time and Diesel seems to be the answer for my purposes, hills are a problem in my area. I haven't decided yet but I'm leaning toward an 08-10 6.4 PSD. Seems to have the best bang for the buck, has full 4 doors, we have kids to bring with us on camping trips. I know most diesel engines have their problems, the oil cooler being the problem with the 6.4. What should I look for when testing out the truck, what should I expect to do to the truck after purchase (what would you do?) I was planning a cooler kit from Bullet Proof Diesels, should I replace the injectors as well. Change all filters and all lubricants and antifreeze. I would consider a mega cab cummins but try to find one, and the price is through the roof in my area(Eastern Canada)!! Truck will not be a daily driver, and will be used 50% for towing and only general use periodically. I plan on having it for a number of years so need to do my research.

I love the 08-10 super duties. The oil cooler issues were more on the 6.0's though.

I'd get some good custom tuning and delete the DPF right off the bat, then just drive the thing. Most of the tuners you buy for these with custom tuning are already loaded on monitor/pods anyways, so they will be your gauges too. Don't go changing injectors for no reason, either they work or they don't, replacing them if they work is just silly and a waste of money.

I tow a relatively lightweight TT with my truck, tag says 3500lbs, but I load it right up with everything, no clue what it actually weighs though, but even my short little truck pulls it around like nothing. I use just a standard drop hitch, my TT is ~22' long, no issues with sway or anything. Doesn't even hit the overload springs in the rear at all even with slightly heavier tongue weight than required. I dropped it another notch on my hitch so I can still open the tail gate with the camper hooked up. :c:

my 08 crew pulls a 32' TT and my golf cart with all my stuff which equals about 10000 lbs with no problems.
