High pressure fuel pump
I have a 2008 F-250 6.4L 2WD and when I accelerate it acts like it is running out of fuel, but once I get my speed up to 70 it runs fine as long as I don't try to accelerate. If I do try to increase my speed it starts bogging down again. I have been told it is the fuel rail sensor and also that it is the high pressure fuel pump. The one mechanic says he has to remove the cab to replace the fuel pump and that will cost $3,000.00. The other mechanic, who says it is the fuel rail sensor says that doesn't need to be done. Has anyone had any experience with this problem? Also, it seems to me that the truck would not run if it was the high pressure fuel pump. Thanks for any help.

Hey boss, I had an '08 model and my high pressure fuel pump went. Fortunately it was under warranty. They did have to pull the cab and it did take them a couple days at the Ford garage. My symptoms was when I stepped on the accelerator it had very very little power. I could get up to about 45 mph very slowly and cruise along right there. When I stepped on the the throttle she wouldnt go any faster than that. If I stopped and shut it down for a few minutes and fired it back up, it would run fine for about 3 minutes, then it was back down to gutless. It doesnt sound like your high pressure fuel pump because from my experience I would have never even gotten to 70 mph. If they run the computer diagnostic program on it, it will tell them if it the pump for sure. Certified Ford dealer garage is your best bet for the diagnosis, if you want somewhat trusted help.

I'm not sure either, but I was saying only for the diagnosis, not necessarily for the maintenance. My issue is that I move all too often being in the military and I can never find a well respected diesel mechanic before its up and time for me to move. oh another thing, my truck only had 65,000 miles on it when the pump went. Its also needed a new fuel/water seperator. and I would get the "drain water seperator" warning and check engine light.

Very easy to determine whether you have a failed HPFP or not... You will have low ICP code with an extended cranking time for a mechanical failure of the pump or No start at all, You will have a P0088/87 for when the truck loses its guts after it gets warmed up. |
