Later 6.0

Are the later (05,06,07) better than the earlier ones? Looking at a couple of trucks, one is a 05' and one is a 06'. Also aside from an egr delete and new oil cooler, what else does it need to have done ( aside from head studs)? Want to get it bullet proof! Thanks for any info!

the later ones have more problems with the ficm than the early ones, but other than the headstuds and egr and oil cooler, from my understandings the ficm is the only other thing they have more problems with

Each has their upside and downside I guess, but I would go 05+ anyways for all of the chassis improvements. Coil sprung front end over the older leaf fronts, heavier front axle, bigger brakes, etc.

03 actually had the "better" egr cooler, 05's supposedly had the worst HPOP, but I still see issues with 03/04's.

I wouldn't let the engine differences sway me one way or the other, I'd go 05 just for the other updates, including a more refined interior etc.

it's a convienience thing but I would upgrade the water drain plug on the HFCM while your at it.

A coolant filter and some gauges would be a good idea too.

I bought an 07'. I am a die hard cummins guy. I have owned nothing but cummins trucks. I love my 6.0. It is awesome. The truck has not had a single issue in 70kmiles. It is in the shop now for a turbo and fuel pump. But that is all ( fuel gauge issues at 2200 miles) . I love it. I don't regret my purchase at all. It ride awesome. Sounds awesome, has a ton of power.. It is stock. I just love the truck. I drove a lot of trucks...I searched for about 7 months before buying... I drove a ton of dmax ( which I liked) and a bunch of cummins... But to me... I liked the ford the best. Hope this helps!

O and the fuel pump was taken out by a bad fuel filter (dealer installed) it had nothing to do with the truck itself. The only downside to buying a ford is I know nothing about them... I know all there is to know about cummins... So I have to learn the psd now... But the guys on here have been helping a lot!!!

i just rolled over 190k miles on my 03. I absolutly beat the SH*T out of my truck, im up to date on maintanace but i work that truck!! VERY VERY FEW issues

This sounds funny and quarky, but look up powerstroke on wikipedia. After reading the wiki article, and talking with some powerstroke enthusiasts, i decided to buy an 06 build two. According to wiki, the 06 build two six liters, have less warranty issues than all the 7.3's, and any other other international powerstroke.

One thing with the 6.0, they are maintenance queens. If you install a coolant filter, and stay on top of the oil changes and filter changes, your going to have a pretty solid truck. I run custom tunes from Matt Robinson at Gearhead Performance, and havent had any issues yet. I have only had his tunes loaded for 10k miles or so, but since loading, i have run my truck pretty hard. I tow my rzr4 on the SRL tune, unstudded all the time. It may be a light pull, but i run it pretty hard.

Stay on top of maintenance, and you will have a pretty reliable six liter.

BTW, i change both fuel filters every 6k miles, and i change my oil and oil filter every 7k miles. I run royal purple oil, and typically motorcraft filters.

i only go 5k on oil, and i go 7.5-10k on filters

06-sixoh 07-09-2012 08:39 PM

I used to only go around 5k as well. Ford however recommends 7500k miles on synthetic, and filter changes at the same time. I have seen any stiction issues at these intervals, and the oil doesnt look bad, although i have not had it analyzed yet. I do notice within a thousand miles of interval, i start smoking a little more.
