05 hard start when warm

hey guys any help here would be appreciated. when i start my truck up when its cold it cranks for about a second then starts right up, my problem is that when the truck is warm restarting dosent go well it will crank :w2: and crank :w2: and crank :w2:. i will usially only hold it for about 5 seconds at a time because i dont want to burn out my starter. sometimes it takes 2 or even 3 turns of the key holding it for 5 seconds to start. any ideas of why this would be happenning? thanks.

This is a very common problem, there are a couple things it could be but it is best to replace all at same time so it won't leave you stranded somewhere. The STC fitting on High presure oil pump/they go bad and a new part is solid so it won't happen again. the other thing is the Dummy plugs in the high presure oil rail/ the Orings can break and causes a high presure oil leak, the new ones have a teflon backer for the oring so it doesn't happen again. It will only cost a little over $100 in parts to fix this problem, but so far you have been lucky because it will eventually be a "hot no start", you will have to wait till it cools down first.
The only special tools that will be needed are a 10mm allen wrench or allen socket/ and a 12mm allen wrench or allen socket. then just a metric socket set and some wrenches.

That dosent sound too bad, where do I get these parts from local parts store? And where exactily are they located? Can somekne show me a couple pictures?

The Snap To Connect fitting is on the high presure oil pump, it sits under a cover almost right below and behind turbo, you remove turbo and pedestal to access the HPOP cover. The 2 Dummy plugs are in the oil rail that is under the valve cover on each side, 1 per side, toward the front of oil rail. you can Google images of both of them

These parts you have to get from Ford, most dealers should have them on the shelf, very common. Tousley Ford probably has the best prices but you would have to wait a couple days for shipping.

i just called the local ford dealer and was told that he has no idea what i was talking about when i said snap to connect fitting on the hpop. is there another name for this? or was this parts guy just stupid?

The parts guy is an Idiot big time, my dealer doesn't even have to look it up they just go back to a drawer and pull it out.4C3Z-9B246-F

how hard of a job is this? i work on my own vehicles but i am no diesel mechanic... is this something that can be tackled in my garage in a weekend?

bobfbigman 04-24-2012 10:43 PM

Yes, I would think it would take around 12 hours total for a first timer, once you learn where everything is and how they come apart it can be done in half that time. If you want a write up on how to do it let me know, it will take a little time to write it up but more than willing to do so.

If you're digging in for the STC fitting, I'd do the updated dummy plugs and stand pipes too: 6E7Z-9A332-B

hey guys i have a question i know i will eventually need the dummy plugs, stand pipes and stc fitting but right now i am extremly pressed for cash and time to do the stc job.... shoud i just start with the dummy plugs since its only a couple hour inexpensive job and see if that fixes the issue? how big of a deal is it to pull the valve covers? anyone have a link to a write up? thanks! :c:
