What needs to be done?

Hey guys, new to the forum, I hope this question is not to common haha. I recently got a 06 6.0, and I just need to now from the pros what I should do to it. I was planning on a Powermaxx, SCT, ARP studs and EGR delete. It has 120,000 miles, all stock exsept for an edge programmer, I am planning on ditching the edge of course. I dont do a lot of towing, I will tow a 24 foot boat 2 or 3 times a year. I use the truck for everyday driving moslty but want a reliable but still well performing set up. Any suggestions will help.

Sounds like you have a pretty good plan for your setup already. I would add a coolant flush and possibly a oil cooler replacement. Then a coolant filter. When i did mine i changed all the glow plugs and most of the harnesses just to be safe. you doing the job yourself or having someone else do it? And cab on or cab off?

Did you just acquire this truck? I'd be doing some preventative maintenance stuff first like Jeff suggested. Your plans sound good though. The sooner you get the Edge off and the SCT on, the better for your truck. Your rear tires may not agree though, but your trans will thank you.

The boat you tow, what does it weigh roughly? We talking 3klbs or 8k lbs...?

I have had this truck for about 30,000 but I am not new to Ford's and diesel's, I live in Utah pretty close to Industrial Injection's and talk to those guys a lot. The boat is about 5k. And I am very religous about porper maintence with all my cars, the injecters have been replaces with stockers, and I change the oil every 3,000 miles. The previous owner never turned the edge on so hopfully the trans is in great shape so the mods can start.!

And yes I am most likely going to be doing the coolant flush and oil filter. I do all the work my self, I know diesels in side and out but not so sure on what to do to these 6.0's

Also you should invest in a fuel pressure gauge ( top of the list on gauges) low fuel pressure will kill injectors...

Gauges, gauges, gauges! Since you're in Utah, swing by Edge and throw yours THROUGH their front window. Yes I HATE Edge and I have a $2300 rebuilt trans as proof they make an inferior product :bat:. Then get an SCT LiveWire and EGT probe. This kills 2 birds with one stone, gauges and an SCT.

Auto Meter and Isso Pro make nice fuel psi gauges. You can even tap into a wire under the dash to have dimmer control.

EGT is pretty important, shutting down above 400* can coke the oil in your turbo, resulting in turbo failure. EOT/ECT monitoring will tell you the condidtion of your oil cooler. A coolant flush is just a good idea, I threw in a coolant filter. A remote oil filter kit is NOT, repeat NOT, a coolant filter.

I'm at 96K, programmed and ridin hard from time to time, until it pushes a gasket, its not getting studded.

Cruise the archieves and the Diesel Bombers search and you'll find plenty of information on what you are looking for. :rocking:

HAHA I would go throw it in there window........but I program there stuff so yea haha. I have orderd guages, boost, fuel pressure and egt, pillar mounted

Why does everyone trash on the Edge??, I have 150k with the Edge on it and 250k on the truck, stock headbolts, I tow 10k almost every weekend for a couple hundred miles and my trans is as tight as new, it is how you drive not what you have on there. I can pitch my truck sideways anytime I want with the power I have, If you drive sanely while towing the Edge is just fine. Maintinace is the the best thing to keep these trucks running good, so is driving them everyday, the ones that only take them out on weekends and beat the hell outta them are the most likely ones to have issues.

Hey another question. In Utah we do emissions and inspection testing once a year, does anyone know if I wont pass if I delete the EGR?

Karl has 2,300 reasons to trash his Edge. I just don't get why someone would spend more money on a product that is less safe and offers less power? Edge was NOTORIOUS for trashing trannies when 6.0's were first out, then to "save" transmissions, they just backed the power down on the newer modules. How nice of them. To each their own, I understand not one product on the market will please everyone, but the Edge simply can not do things custom tuning can.

Depends on the test, are they visual testing or what? Chances are you would not pass a visual if this is what they do.
