Why you DON'T want after market filters
 

I travel alot so I have used service centers geared toward 18 wheelers to service my truck - especially if I have a trailer on.

Well I just changed everything on my own today - first time in a very l-o-n-g time.

Pulled the water drain off the fuel system to replace it with the knurled brass one. As they say pictures speak a thousand words. That is rust and dirt! I will say that the fue bowl on the engine where the secondary filter is was clean so. The fleetguard did not have the water membrane like the IH does,

Another thing I discovered is that to remove the cap off the housing to change the primary filter mine does NOT take a 36mm socket - that just flopped around - my 1 3/8" 12 point socket fit perfect. The only think I can figure is that when ever they changed the filter they just forced the socket on until it has resized the cap.

I believe the water seperator is before the filter, mine was the same way with ford filters, also I found that the main fuel filter cap is 35mm and the oil cap is 36mm. I found when you drive alot you have to drain the water every month even if the lite doesn't come on, because that little bit of water will sit in there and corode the plug like that, I had to drill mine out.

I can't even get mine out!!! I'm going to have to take the lines off and the whole cover, to change to the brass knob

Bob I had just read that somewhere recently, the fuel filter down below is in fact 35mm...

I've been using a 36mm socket the whole time. You'd think with everything I've learned and done with this truck, I'd know something that simple huh?:argh:

I never knew it existed until I joined this place as I almost always had my service done at a shop. Now that I am working on it the water will be drained/checked a lot more often. Also I NEVER had a water light come on.

I was very lucky in that my plug came out very easily and with the new one being brass I should never have to worry about rust :jump:


I went to my local AutoZone and picked up the 36mm on their loaner program so that is going back today. Now that I know my 1 3/8 fits that will be in the truck at all times.
