Default Injector cleaning

I got a friend who has a mechanic who sends out his injectors to be cleaned and bored out for $600? Is that worth it for the sticky injectors? I'm trying to figure out why I'm only getting 8.9 mpg...! My truck sounds like it has a slight miss but I can't find it!! I got the AE with ford enhanced bundle but there is no codes and I can't get it to show a bad injector on the cylinder contribution test, and I also tried shutting them off one by one and can't figure it out? So I was wOndering if that would work? Bc I don't have $2000 to dump into injectors...

And the truck at idle has like a surge? I noticed that the ficm goes from 48 to 47 to 47.50 to 48 when it does the surge... And when I get it up to temp and shut it off go into a store and come out it starts fine but if I get on it half throttle no more than 2500 rpm it misses and stutters and blows some white/ blue smoke( I used to race motocross and it's like a 2 stroke that is too rich and you have to clear it out)

Definitely sounds like injector issues and no I wouldn't send them out to have them "bored"... I doubt they're "boring" anything, they probably do an honing, where they flow a fluid through it with some sort of "material" that actually opens up the passages. This is a cobby way of doing this, especially if they don't test after to match flow rates from the injectors. I think it'd be a complete waste of money honestly. You can just buy the 1 or 2 injectors you need for the same or less money. They're hard to catch sometimes with AE, especially since they disappear once the motor is warm. Do you know what you're looking for with the contribution tests? I mean it just shows a graph and you should know what to see for a bad injector. I'm not sure I'd be able to pick one out even, I haven't played with it enough.

It's tough to catch man. I'm not sure I know AE well enough to help you out on that. Did you do the simple buzz test on them too?

Yea they all buzzed and sounded good... But I know there has to be a bad one... Bc it still smokes like a champ on cold start up and smell like diesel strong... That's why I was wondering if I was one of the rare ficm cases!!!

What color torq mark is on the factor head bolts? Mine have a green mark and I'm trying to find out if gaskets have been done yet without studs.... But the more I think about it someone could have reused the originals, which I hear you can't. I'm not having any trouble yet ( knock on wood)

I've never seen color marking on the bolts used on my truck, but that doesn't mean anything. Probably depends on what mood the tech is in that day!? Doesn't really matter... if you have a bolt there, you're going to want studs at some point... haha.

Your cold start issue could be related to other things. Weak batteries will surprisingly make them run crummy on start up. Could be glowplug issues as well, but unfortunately you're probably right, injector would be more common.

As for the FICM... possible. Best way is to find a buddy with a good running 6.0 and borrow his for 15 minutes.
