So...I just got home from deployment and she's got a phantom coolant leak (step-dad said she ate about a gallon in a week). Yea...phantom, but you know as well as I do what happened and I think I know why...-whispers- the studs were originally done by Ford so the heads didn't get decked :argh: Sooooo, it looks like that full write up that I'm gonna be doing is gonna be on my own rig :baby:

Anyone know if my ARPs will still be good if I pull them out to pull the heads off or will I need to drop another $500 on a new set?

I would definately think the studs would still be good, they are not made to be replaced every time like the turque to yield bolts, did ou check to make sure they weren't overfilling the degas bottle, should only be filled to min line

Yea, it's not overflowing out the degas bottle. The coolant level isn't high...it's nonexistent

I wouldn't be so worried about the studs, as I would the heads themselves... If it's not overpressurizing it could be cracked heads. I would suggest having an oil analysis done to see if coolant is mixing with oil or anything of that sort first.

Then check the obvious things, make sure the coolant bottle isn't cracked, or you have it leaking out from somewhere. I just very recently developed a MAJOR leak out of NO WHERE. The clamp that seals the big hose to the waterpump failed, but was still in place, allowed coolant to go everywhere and was hard to trace. If it happened like that the coolant would disappear really quick, and whoever was driving may never even notice it.

I would do a little looking around before jumping to conclusions, though I hate to say it, your first assessment is probalby right... :ouch:

my truck has one of those phantom coolant leaks. but mine is a puddle on the ground once in a while. don't know where it is leaking from, back pass side of engine somewhere?

Josh, an actual leak is far better than it disappearing without a trace. At least a leak you know is just a leak, if it's disappearing and you don't see it, you're probably burning it (ie headgaskets or cracked heads etc).

I've got a guy gonna take a look at it (former 22 year Ford mech) and is gonna do a full A-Z run through (with appropriate pressure gauges, load tests etc.) before I go tearing apart the top end.

Reason he no longer works for them is because he got tired of them shop just throwing parts at the truck (to hold it over until the warranty expired) when they didn't even really fix the issue. He went independent specifically to make sure the 6.0 work would be done once and done right.
