Popping sound an black smoke

Ok so after many years of staying away from Diesels I bought a used 2006 F250 6.0.....high an sight being 20 20 I would of went another route. Ok so it has never giving me any issues the last year or so until yesterday while driving it started making a hell of a popping sound an blowing black smoke the popping seemed to decrease with higher rpm an started idealing ruff, i took it to the closet friends house i could aprox 2 miles from when it started, This morning I pulled the engine codes an had a MAP sensor fault an intake temp fault an 2 EGR faults, where Im lost at is usually does an egr locking up or going bad blow white smoke had one guy tell me my turbo went on it, just looking for some ideas of what to try an which way to start, I have pulled the egr to clean it an was extreamly nasty.

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

the popping sound seemed to be coming from the Air box checked the filter an looked good

Well if the map sensor became disconnected in some way it would certainly cause this. Check the sensor out and the lines going to it.

On the intake manifold there is a vacuum line that runs to the passenger side and is slipped over a nipple on the manifold, make sure that's still on there, and inspect that hose really well.

well cked vacum lines didnt see anything also replaced the EGR......issue is now it will not start......tries to crank but almost like no fuel.......it was running ruff before sitting for 3 days while i was waiting on the EGR an now no start at all.....Im lost...........

Are you getting any smoke while cranking it?

truegrit1 02-05-2012 01:55 PM

Not that I noticed

No smoke while cranking means the injectors are not firing. Could be a FICM/battery issue, or it could be a high pressure oil leak. When you turn the key initially to the "run" position and are waiting for the WTS light, can you hear the injectors buzz under the hood at all? How does that sound? You can test the FICM as well using the FICM guide at the top of the 6.0 page in the sticky section. I'd recommend that. If that tests out and your batteries are good (ideally they should be load tested), then I'd look into a high pressure oil leak. Easily determined with a scanner.

The black smoke once it's started is most likely unrelated. Has the EGR valve ever been cleaned? I would just recommend a full delete kit if you live in a state that doesn't check for that stuff (basically only Cali does).
