limp home mode

Ford F350 S&B intake no other mods.
Turbo was farting under acceleration and turbo boost indicator was flopping to zero under load or high speeds so I sent it to the dealer. I just got my truck back from dealer needed ECM updated and now i can not get on the throttle long enough to reach 60 mph with out the limp home mode kicking in. This resets after restarting but what the hell is going on here.

DieselDanBoy 02-02-2012 10:15 PM

bring it straight back to the dealer, seeing how they just re-flashed it, its under their service warranty. sounds like something they messed up.

does the check engine light come on?

ohio6liter 02-02-2012 10:21 PM

Not the engine light but the electronic throttle control wrench comes on. I repeated the acceleration and restart three times with the same results

DieselDanBoy 02-02-2012 10:25 PM

sounds like the software in the pcm is messing up. if it was running absolutely fine up to the point where the pcm was updated, i'd say this is the dealers doing.

ohio6liter 02-02-2012 10:27 PM

It was not running fine but was better than this. Previously my truck did not seem to have the power it should have and then I was having troubles with the turbo

DieselDanBoy 02-02-2012 10:28 PM

what exactly happened with the turbo and what did they do to fix it? if a problem still exists with the turbo it could be causing this

ohio6liter 02-02-2012 10:32 PM

If I was hauling my fifth wheel the turbo would bounce while getting up to speed and "fart" during acceleration. This also happened during hard acceleration up to 70-85 MPH. Take offs were not great, never blew smoke and averaged around 14.6 mpg.

DieselDanBoy 02-02-2012 10:33 PM

ok so what did ford do about it?

ohio6liter 02-02-2012 10:37 PM

scanned engine found it was not updated and installed new update along with transmission update

DieselDanBoy 02-02-2012 10:43 PM

ok so they didnt do anything with the turbo? you need to take it back ASAP before they tell you they cant do anything because you waited. whatever they did is most likely causing this, they didnt fix the problem. In all honesty, this sounds like a pcm issue. turning the key off and back on seems to reset it? thats because your pcm needs driving information before it can act and throw codes or lights. it cant know whats wrong until its driven through to a problem. OR the pcm is throwing into limp mode itself because it has the wrong information to compare with what it's actually reading.

does your turbo problem still exist? what else happens before it goes to limp mode?

ohio6liter 02-02-2012 10:55 PM

I got a hold of the dealer before they closed and told them I would be waiting for them when the pulled in tomorrow morning. As far as I was told and as long as it took in the shop no one touched the turbo. Definitely resets when I restart the engine. Nothing out of the ordinary occurs to me before limp mode occurs, just getting on the highway and accelerating hard to 30 psi and then shutdown to limp mode. I can run in the city fine no problems, acceleration from take off has improved though.

On your 06, find the drivers side exhaust manifold from the top of the truck. Towards cylinder 2 (the front cylinder) you'll see a stainless tube threaded into the manifold. This is the EBP tube. Attached to the other end is the EBP sensor (exhaust back pressure). I would remove the sensor and that tube, and clean both of them very well. Some pipe cleaners may be needed for that tube. This will make your turbo do some really funny things. I would also inspect the wire harness that connects to that sensor. I had this happen to mine, two of three wires were exposed. My turbo would fall to 0psi driving down the road and I could only get it to light again if I stomped on it and it downshifted. It was also farting under acceleration like you said. It's quick and cheap to remove that and clean it, so it wont hurt to do even if it fixes your issue.

Any competent tech should be able to hook a scanner up and check this stuff as well. My sensor when it was messing up was alternating between it's max setting and min setting non stop. It never threw a check engine light either.

DieselDanBoy 02-03-2012 09:11 AM

ok now that makes sense Mdub, could it be like an overboost/underboost shutdown?

Mdub707 02-03-2012 09:40 AM

Tough to say for sure without any scanner data or codes, but it's a relatively quick and easy thing to check and don't cost much.

But yeah, that's basically what happens. Those sensors get gummed up from soot, and then when your EGT's run high that soot turns to goop and clogs the sensor up. When the sensor can't see what's going on it thinks backpressure is going up so it might cut fuel and limp the truck. Worth looking in to anyways.

ohio6liter 02-03-2012 05:22 PM

Okay, dropped off to dealer they tore into turbo and found out turbo has had taken a shot from some debris and is shot. New turbo coming monday. Mdub will check out that sensor when truck gets back from shop thanks for the help guys

DieselDanBoy 02-03-2012 05:42 PM

see another idea that i was toying with (but didnt think it would be a good one) was the turbo having a mechanical malfunction and something was picking up on it, sending it to limp mode. but good, glad you took it back :tu:

and no problem, let us know how you make out :c:

Mdub707 02-04-2012 08:19 PM

How did debris get to the turbo anyways?

trying to upload pictures but can not figure out why will not work? if you want pictures of turbo can send directly to email
Mdub do not know how debris got into turbo but it must have been before I bought it. Installed new S&B air filter myself.

Mdub707 02-07-2012 07:10 AM

Upload your pictures to photobucket first, then just copy the link from photobucket, they'll pop right up here.

bobfbigman 02-07-2012 10:00 AM

My buddy had his turbo destroyed by the rubber gromet for the airfilter sensor, when the tech put the sensor back in he pushed the grommet most of the way into the intake, while he was driving it home it got sucked into the turbo, you would have thought it was hit by a 3/8 bolt or something by the way it looked, doesn't have to be a big or hard piece of debri to hit it when it is spinning so fast.. Glad you got it figured out

Mdub707 02-07-2012 10:41 AM

Water injection will destroy the turbo blades believe it or not (if you're injecting in front of the turbo) because of how fast they spin. The mist/droplets will kill the impeller blades. That's why the only guys you see injecting in front of the turbo are big name sled pullers, cause they're changing turbo's out often enough it doesn't matter.

Look at where the damage is... That's on the turbine side... like something was coming through the exhaust and hitting the turbine wheel... wtf? I can't say I've seen this very often... Definitely a fair amount of corrosion on the vanes too. I'm not sure if that one is even salvageable.

Did you buy this truck new, or used? I wonder what the heck this turbo has been through...

You can typically get an 05-07 stocker for like $250 on the forums though...

ohio6liter 02-08-2012 07:32 PM

Bought the truck used, about 6 weeks ago from a Chevy dealer. They were suppose to check it over before my purchase, agreed to have Ford to replace the turbo update all computers and eat the bill for $1500. Do not know much about previous owners except for what the car fax could tell us. Last used in Maryland and second party bought out of New York. Ford Mechanic never saw one like this before that is why they took pictures
