Update

Well finally got home this weekend and started working on my truck. Ive only been to the store 3 times since ive started lol. not too bad everything is breaking pretty easy and isnt taking too long to do it. Have 1 head pulled off so far the drivers side. Going to take the passenger off tomorrow after i get the ac system off. Found out my turbo is leaking oil and has some shaft play. side to side and forward to back. so looks like im getting a new turbo. anyone want to buy a turbo and fix it lol. i have quite a few pictures so ill get them uploaded some time in the next few days. I also did the coolant flush the day before i started the heads too forever. around 6 or so hours to do it all. i would say its a pretty easy job as long as you keep things organized.

Doing your own studs really isn't a hard job, people just think it's such a complex task because they see everything that is on the engine. It's just a pushrod V8 with a few additional components. It can be torn down with fairly basic hand tools, granted, as with any job there are some instances where specialty tools are required. HG/ARP install is not as difficult and technical as the dealership/shop pricing portrays it to be.

Keep us posted :pca1:

i finally had the time to take the passenger side head off. didnt end up taking the whole ac system out just the condenser. ill get some pics up today of it. it was like 6 or so bolts and broke the lines to the ac after i drained it. had to zip tie the back 2 bolts to get it out. anyone want pictures of certain things?

Typical of the old fiber screens... makes you wonder what caused it to fail... and if anything went past it to the HPOP huh? The new screen should hold up just fine.

Sorry its been so long since ive updated this. Had a few problems at home i had to deal with first. Finally put the truck back together and seems to be holding up pretty well. I had a small fuel leak, loose banjo bolt. Also my turbo isnt giving me much boost and im dumping a ton of black smoke. Im still checking for cracks in the boots. Also i have 3 codes for injectors. Probably going to get upgraded injectors here pretty soon. other than that im hoping to get my new tunes this week and start working on the gauges and suspension. Time to sand down everything and paint the underneath.

was it hard to remove the heads with the cab on the truck

when you renmoved the heads did you get them crack tested and check for flat (not warped)

what head studs did you buy
what head gaskets did you use

I can answer some of this...

It's harder to take them off cab on than it is cab off, that's for sure, but it can be done. The hardest part is lifting a 90lb head out of the engine bay. You will want at least one buddy there to help. Some of the bolts also hit the cab in the back, so you'll have to get tricky. Some guys pound the firewall in with a sledge/pipe, some try and lift the head out with the bolt attached, etc. Going to need to repeat that procedure on the way back in too with the stud.

As for studs, ARP's work just fine.
Headgaskets should be OEM only.

Glad to hear it's relatively good Jeff. Need to figure out those injector codes though. What numbers are they? Might be a loose connection at the FICM.

As for the black smoke, is the VGT solenoid plugged in all the way? What about the EBP sensor? Check the wiring over on the EBP sensor and clean the tube/sensor itself ass well.

yEAH, when we do the Hgs on my sisters truck we are just going to pull the motor and do it on a cart, I pulled alot of motors in my time so it shouldn't be too bad, going to make a bracket that bolts inplace of the turbo pedestal for the lifting eye.

jeffa6980 03-26-2012 04:05 PM

Yea it wasnt too bad. I used arps and oem hg. I had the heads checked and pressure tested. i think the codes for the injectors are for number 2, 6, and 7.

Any new pics?

jeffa6980 04-30-2012 09:06 PM

Im sure i can get a few more for ya. Truck is still pretty dirty and still trying to work all the kinks out. Anyting in particular you want to see?

Diesel_Daddy6.0 04-30-2012 09:22 PM

She still torn down? Pics of any complications you ran into or any tricks you can pass on

jeffa6980 05-09-2012 06:29 PM

Nah shes all back together. One thing i did do different then what most people did is the ac system. I only took the outer cover off closest to the passenger head and swung it out of the way and it gave me enough room to remove the head and all the bolts. Only other problems i ran into were the injectors arent acting right. Going to do some more trouble shooting after i try rev x. Most likely need 3 new injectors. I havent been home much in the past few months to deal with the truck. I also had some trouble with the tranny acting up running some new tunes from eric to clear it up. its the 3-5 shift and the 5-6 shift are pretty hard. Also my tranny pan is leaking from the rear corner even with a new gasket and some gasket maker. Still confused as to why its leaking. Ill try to post pics when i get home again.
