Stiction or bad injectors????

Need some help here. Income taxes will be in next week and i don't wanna fork over 1200 for a few injectors unless i absolutely have to. I'm still not sure exactly what Stiction is. But it'll start no problem even in the cold. If its not yet all that warmed up when i take off for work i feel like i am pulling a house behind me. it lags so bad. once warm it runs fine. between 1200-2000 rpms in its FINAL GEAR the whole truck will shake. Almost like a death wobble but still able to drive and maintain. Not very often it'll throw some white smoke out of it also. seems like its only when i bury my foot though and NOT VERY OFTEN. That's the only things going on with it though. Just problems when taking off when cold, rpm with final gear shake, and rarely will see white smoke (average maybe once a week if that). Also want to add that in my shop we have two 2003 F350 CC LB 4x4 with the 6.0's and when i start them when they are cold and just throw it in gear and hit the throttle they seem to have twice the power mine does when on a cold motor. Figured it would help so that i don't get someone saying "just let it warm up longer". Yea they run better warm but i still shouldn't be having the issue and our work trucks don't have it at all. Figured if ya'll are more prone to saying Stiction i might just try some Rev-X and see what happens. When i talked to the dealer i got it from they said injectors 5,6,7,8 were "bad". i just don't know how bad.

Have you tested the FICM? Mine was giving me grief eventually telling me that I had circuit low on all 8 injectors, and number 8 was new! Long story short, that FICM is still being worked on.

Nah i tested my FICM and it was bad. But then both my batteries died. Replaced them with new ones about 2 weeks ago and retested FICM and it is perfectly fine. Ranged from 46.6-48 through all tests.

If it tested bad once chances are its crap. They can even be bad when showing proper voltage. Since you have other 6.0's around just swap the FICM's and see if that fixes it.

XDoes the exhaust sound like a gasser with a miss? When my injector stuck open it sounded like my Mustang with a plug off. I can't see 4 injectors failing at the same time. Just sounds weird.

I've read that there are soldering issues with FICMs. I wonder if the new battery voltage was enough to bridge the gap,so to speak, now giving a proper reading.

yea sometimes it sounds like a gaser with a miss. i'm gonna wait till this weekend and try to swap the FICM with another truck and see what happens. probably be friday night so i'll post it back up on Saturday what happens. But if anyone has any other suggestions feel free

just sent 2 of my injectors to a place in so cal called becs pacific. they are in whittier, ca. they have the equipment to test the injectors which from what i understand is very expensive equipment. 2 injectors tested and replaced o rings was $70ish with shipping. Both injectors checked out which saved me a bunch of dough. also if your injectors test bad they will apply the testing charge toward refurbished injectors if you'd like which carry the same warranty as the dealership's injectors. think their refurbished prices are around $180.

my truck acted like yours when i had an injector out as well as when my ficm went out. the ficm didn't lose so much on the top end though like you're saying once it was warmed up. the injector did however.

there's also a guy on craigslist that fixes ficms. search sf bay area craigslist for "ficm" and he will come up. he's done hundreds of the repairs. the guys name is shawn. he's local to me so i met up with him but he does most of his repairs via shipping. very good guy and honest.

thanks for the note on the stuck injector. sounds a lot like what i'm facing right now. any way to tell if an injector is stuck open by looking at it?

i just took it up and had it diagnosed. Was there for 2 hours and they couldn't figure it out. All my injectors tested out fine on their diagnostics and said there were NO MISFIRES. So now i am completely lost. My last guess as well as thiers is a bad HPOP and IPR. I have oil on my bellhousing and every rare once in awhile i just remembered that sometimes (rarely) i'll have a hot no start. So would this be a logical assumption. Also the oil pressure (i believe if i remember right) was reading 4400 psi and i think they said its supposed to be over 5000 psi. So what are your thoughts?

thumperf350 01-25-2012 08:24 PM

on the 2003 6.0 the icp sensor is on the back of the motor up behind the turbo. it is fairly difficult to get to. there are articles about symptoms and replacement i'm sure. from what i understand if it leaks/shorts out it can compromise the signal to the computer about actual oil pressure that the hpop is providing. don't know if this is the case but when they leak they can leak down the back of the motor and onto the bellhousing. might be something to look into.

yea true cause i figured out that the IPR and ICP are right next to each other on the back topside

Well, what did it end up being bud? I have a similar issue, even the occational no hot start. So, please get back with us! :) Thanks

I'm am having the same issue with starting and driving cold, it will just sputter down the street, no matter how much you stomp on the petal. I also get the death wobble, almost feels like a bad u joint. This continues until it warms up then it runs pretty good, with the occasional miss. I am very interested to learn what the problem was with yours.

Guys with " stiction" issues. . . . . $50 fix. . .get some hot shot secret, run for about 500 miles and you should see some improvement. Keep running till next oil change and stiction will be cured. Then quality oil, ( I run a syn blend 5-40) and some rev x and you should be fine. If you still have issues it isn't stiction but you will still have a nice clean oiling system for minimal expense! Stiction is a buildup of crud on the spool valve that makes your injector fire. It is critical these components are functioning properly to maintain a good running truck!
