Driving With Bad Head Gaskets
 

Ok.. I just had a shop put in a egr delete on my truck an turbo clean an all that good stuff.. it ran me 2000!.. So.. after all that they check my HG an said theres is some bubbles still..an that i would need new HGS.. I dont have the 4500 to get the job done right now.. How long or should i drive my truck???

How did they test for bad head gaskets? Did they also change the oil cooler? If they didnt that could be a cause of all the problems to start with... i dont do an egr delete/replacement unless i upsell coolant flush and the oil cooler and not just for me and the shop to make more money, because the oil coolers get wadded up with broken down coolant and other debris floating around in there and 9 times out of 10 are restricted to a point where it will kill another egr cooler or rupture the oil cooler.

When you say the head gasket is bubbling im assuming gasses are coming out of your coolant tank thus creating bubbles. I personally would check this my self to make sure the shop isn't trying to take you for a ride. I'm not sure if the same goes for diesel but on a gas engine you would start the truck and pull the cap off the coolant tank while the engine is cold look inside the coolant tank to see if its bubbling also look for oil as well on the inner walls of the tank and cap.

If its bubbling then ya your head gasket is toast or you have a crack somewhere in the engine.

If it does have a blown head gasket then I wouldnt drive it at all. If gasses are escaping the engine through the cooling system then then coolant is escaping through the engine which will cause a whole mess of problems.

Three things you could do
1. Do the head gasket your self. There are a few write ups to walk you through it
2. Call a few shops and get some quotes and have them do it.
3. Go on craiglist and see what similar trucks are going for in your area subtract the cost of repairs and sell it.

If you get it done do the head studs to ensure you never run into this problem again.

I feel for you man I hope the day never comes when I meet this fork in the road..

What would be a reasonable price for this work? I ask because I may be needing it done.

An EGR delete and a turbo clean should have been less than half of what you paid. Prices vary by what shop you go to. A Ford dealer will probably be more than a local mom and pop shop, but a decent diesel shop with a good name should probably fall in between.

So is it going to be 4500 on top of the original 2000 to do the HG? Seems like THEY should have properly diagnosed the issues first, before wasting time and money on it. But hey, it's your money and time they're wasting man!

I bet a Ford dealer could do headgaskets for less than $4500.... and I would never pay that much. I see a few guys on the forums do these jobs on the side for the $2k area, some less, some more, and that includes EGR delete, headstuds, new gaskets and the labor....
