Sct tuner

I just had egr delete kit installed and was hoping the check engine light wouldn't come on but it did. I'm looking at tuners but was wondering if I could use a friends sct tuner who has an 05 f250 to turn off my check engine light, or is it a 1 time use or are each tuner set up for 1 truck only. I'm looking at an sct tuner at mkm for $379 with 3 free custom tunes and was wondering what would be good for me. I need tow code, and was wondering if the 105 hp street race would be to much for head gaskets? I don't have heavy foot but do like to use the power once in awhile. Sorry about the length of questions and appreciate the advice.thanks

You cannot use your friends SCT without returning his truck back to stock. SCT tuners can be used on 5 different trucks. Each time you change trucks you will use up one use. After the last one you have to pay SCT $150 to reset the device.

Correct, you will probably just have to get your own.

Did you leave the EGR valve in place? Sometimes you can just plug it in and zip tie it out of the way and the light will go off. Or just leave it in the manifold plugged in. The cooler is the real problem, not the valve.

As for tunes, stick with a reputable tuner from the boards. It's not always what level of tune you're running, but who made the tune. As for headgaskets... crap shoot man.

The valve is still in and plugged in. Mechanic told me would be a 50/50 chance of code being thrown. Will there be any problems mechanically till I receive my tuner or it's a check engine light that won't effect anything. What do you mean by the cooler is the problem? Sorry I've read slot about this but still a little green when it comes to this stuff.
Where is a good place to get tuner and tunes at good price?

Yeah sometimes the light goes off, sometimes not. Typically the 05+ trucks the light will come on, and the earlier trucks it will stay off.

I would definitely leave it plugged in though, some strategies the fan wont come on without it plugged in. The EGR cooler is the main cause of failure. When it's removed there is no longer even exhaust flow to the EGR valve so it doesn't matter if it's there or not.

I would just buy the tuner from one of the big tuners, like Innovative, Gearhead, Quicktrick, GoGo, etc...:c:

Would an SCT be a good choice if I was looking just for a towing and or fuel economy tune? Truck is basically a stock 06 6.0 PSD with 156,000+ miles.

It's the only choice IMO. I love my aggressive towing tune from Innovative... even when not hauling heavy, it's a great tune.

As for economy goes, I will tell you what I was told when I first joined the forums, "don't mod for economy, mod for power, and if you happen to get some economy, be grateful." With that said, I got an economy tune, and it was a complete waste, I got worse mpg than stock, but I think most of it was it was so slow like the my foot was buried the whole time trying to keep it up to speed. It's basically stock tuning with a touch more timing, just no fuel.

I tested the economy against my extreme street tune. I did 1 full tank of fuel on economy and drove like a putz. I didn't go over 2k rpms and kept it under 10psi of boost as much as I could, I avgd 15.1mpg. I then loaded extreme street up and proceeded to drive around like a teenage kid late for prom. I avgd 15.3.... guess which tune I haven't used since then.

I hate to sound like Capt Obvious again, but here we go. :superman:

What year is YOUR truck? You stated your friend has an 05, what about you? I have an 03 set up like yours, no cooler but has an EGR valve, and it has no CEL.

Have you checked for codes to be certain that it is in fact EGR related? While it may be the likely suspect, until you read the codes, you can't be certain that is why the CEL is on.

The cooler is the real problem because: 1. it's divertering hot exhaust back to the intake 2. the amount of exhaust being diverted 3. the OEM hose clamps are horrid and leak.

Karl it says 2006 powerstroke in the right hand corner of his profile there... :hellox:

Pffftttt!!! Who reads that!?! Ok, fine, I doo-mossed it. :ouch: It's not like I didn't warn you that I was putting my Captain Obvious cape on.

Like Meat Loaf said, Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad. What codes is this truck popping?
