better mpg?

Hey guys

Currently im getting 10.1 mpg on the over head. I gotta do something quick on a tight budget. The whole reason the little lady let me get this bad a$$ truck was because i told her id be getting better mpg than her car lol. As soon as she finds out I'm getting worse mpg than my old dodge ram gasser the dog house ill go lol.

Any way here is my question I was thinking about replacing the fuel filter getting an oil change and putting 2 pints of sea foam into the fuel filter upon replacement. Do u think that would be enough to bump me up 2mpg or am I dreaming lol

The truck has 91k miles its a 03 6.0 4x4 automatic. injectors and fuel filter never been replaced so regardless I think this would be a good time to replace the filter

will a clean egr help or would unplugging it be more beneficial I live in california so I cant delete it.

And lastly are there any fuel additives you guys swear by? I'm new to diesel so Idk what i should and shouldnt be throwing in with my fuel and what works vs what doesnt.

I know nothing is gonna give me the mpg of a prius going down hill I'm just trying to find out if there's anything I do at this point to change that number from 10.1to 10.2 even lol and I have to figure it out by Friday cause we are going on a trip and taking my truck lol

Thank you all

Excuse all those faces I have no idea how they got there

Like I said in the other thread, if the fuel filters have never been replaced, sell the truck. I find it very hard to believe that is even true. Pull the fuel filters out and look at them. I've seen some that went almost 45k miles, and they were BLACK. Truck still ran, but not great.

Ok im gonna check in a little bit. Also is it normal for it to be slower at WOT vs 1/2 throttle on these trucks?

Mdub707 12-20-2011 07:57 AM

No, you're probably running out of fuel if the filters haven't been changed in a while, which also means damage is being done to the injectors.

So what course of action should I take at this point if say my fuel filter is fairly new? Im not getting any DCT's on injectors so does it sound like a bad filter?

Btw try not to bash on me too had but this is my first diesel and I noticed you said filters instead of filter does that mean these trucks have more than one fuel filter?

If the fuel filter truely hasn't ever been changed ill post a pic of its condition lol

Ill be going to AutoZone at noon is their any fuel additive I should get or is recommended?

Thanks mdud they should rename this site "mdud-dieselopinions.com" lol I see you in every post haha but thank God you're here or else we would all be lost lol

There are two fuel filters on these trucks, one down on the frame rail on the drivers side, basically under the drivers side door, it is on the HFCM (Horizontal fuel control module, or something along those lines) it's your pump/filter/water separator down there. The other is up on top of the engine next to the oil filter. You can read this: https://www.dieselbombers.com/ford-p...werstroke.html

I would recommend ONLY using Motorcraft or International brand fuel filters. No matter what.

You typically will only get codes for injectors if it's an electrical issue. If it's a mechanical, typically you will NOT get codes, but you could probably pick it up on a scanner.

Change the filters for peace of mind anyways. I HIGHLY doubt they have never been changed cause that truck wouldn't even run. Change them every 10k miles religiously, and drain the water at that time too.

When I started coming here, there was very little love in the 6.0 section. It's booming in here now! Mdub, with a "B" not a "D"... it stand for my intials Mike W. Dubya.... get it...?

As for the smiley's, it's all code. So each smiley actually has a text reading, but it shows up as a smiley, so if you type in the letters L O L or something, it probably stands for the smiley that is being posted. :c:

91K on original filters!?! :scare2: Holy cow! I did a tune up on my brothers gas truck once that hadn't been touched for 105K miles, after the basic ignition tune-up it promptly dumped the O2 sensor. Don't be surprised if you change said filters and another problem rears its ugly head! When were the oil filters changed? Or the oil? The trans fluid and BOTH filters should have been changed about 60K. Like Mdub said, SELL IT, trade it in or some other form of get out from under it!

BTW, I get 12 mpg in town on 35s in mine, 14 on 33s, yeah, yer rig has issues.

03Powerstroke 12-20-2011 06:24 PM

I GOT TO SEE THE PICS... PLEASE:pca1:

ALSO, whoever had that truck previously needs to have their ass beat!!! :wack:
