04 F350 motor cranking..cranking..cranking..no start

Truck starts a little rough in cold morning...but always starts. Starts and runs good all day. Started this morning okay...drove/ran about 30 miles/1 hour...turned truck off...30 mins later tried starting..just cranks and cranks...never done this before. Cranking is strong..batteries are strong.
230,000 miles, original motor replaced about 75,000 miles by ford warranty. All injectors replaced around 125k miles.. Half injectors replaced again and egr delete and oil cooler replaced at about 200k miles.
I'm in a rural area.hardly any good diesel mechanics around here. Any ideas? Can I buy a code reader at any of the national chain auto parts stores? I currently don't have a code reader.
Check engine light has been on every since the 200k work was done.

check the FICM... any smoke while cranking?

darla22 12-10-2011 05:41 PM

I went out right after starting this thread to try start it again...and the stupid thing started right up..a second or two of cranking and it started....the strangest thing...its never done this...now I'm afraid to turn it off..
When it was cranking...I did not notice it to have been smoking while trying to start it

DieselDanBoy 12-10-2011 05:44 PM

if your gonna get a code reader, dont get one from autozone or advanced or somewhere like that, they usually dont cooperate with diesels/newer vehicles.... it might just be worth it to have a shop read the codes, or spend some money and get a good one for personal use.

same question as 03powerstroke, any smoke while cranking?

check your fuel filters?

if the light has been on since the 200k service, you should've turned right around and brought it back! :scare2:

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

hows the oil level?

03Powerstroke 12-10-2011 05:50 PM

check the ficm, when my ficm was dying it started the same way

darla22 12-10-2011 06:01 PM

Okay...on checking out the ficm.... I need a code reader though? Or, am I suppose to check it with volt met? I can read other threads with the instructions.
The place I had the 200k work done is a shop specializing in powerstrokes only...called Powerstroke Magic. They are 95 miles away...so it hasn't been easy to just take it back...but looking like I'm gunna have to. Oil change and fuel filter change is due

03Powerstroke 12-10-2011 06:27 PM

use a volt meter...

DieselDanBoy 12-10-2011 09:04 PM

eliminate the basics, fuel filter and oil change first! drain water/fuel seperator too!

and 03 powerstroke, i completely agree with you on the FICM, just thought maybe we should eliminate the low $$$ items first! then do some checking :c:

Mdub707 12-11-2011 04:58 PM

Test that FICM and let us know what you find.

Check engine light is on... what are the codes? Even a basic code reader should be able to at least read the codes, probably can't diagnose with it like you could with AE or somethign, but should point us in the right direction.

its free to test the FICM, it costs money to do oil, filters, ect. So the lowest cost is checking the FICM

Mdub707 12-11-2011 06:01 PM

Agreed, FICM testing will only cost you whatever it costs for the kind of beer you drink, and price varies by how many you can drink in the 15 minutes it takes you and buddy/gf/wife/child/dog to help you test it.

i was thinking in the sense that it rather be a little $$$ for the filters and all that rather than a brand new FICM.

he said they were both due anyway, so why not?

03Powerstroke 12-11-2011 07:07 PM

he shouldent buy a new FICM, Mdub fixes them. also why not just test the FICM so you know if thats causing your issue

DieselDanBoy 12-11-2011 07:23 PM

thats given if Mdub wants to (which im sure he would), alternative is spend money on a new one (which is what i was assuming).

and i always thought the logical way to diagnose was to eliminate whats easiest first? so you know what its not.

being a technician, this has saved my a$$ more than once.

03Powerstroke 12-11-2011 07:49 PM

this is the last thing im gana say...:argh: testing the ficm is FREE and is so easy that it takes LESS time than it takes to do an oil change

Mdub707 12-12-2011 07:43 AM

He has to spend money either way I'm guessing.

He should do both, test the FICM, do the maintenance, let us know what happens!

DieselDan, I wouldn't turn down a FICM fixing for a forum member here no matter what the circumstances. :c:

Thats what i figured ^, I will say that I was not aware that you fixed them yourself at the time that i said that. :tu:

Mdub707 12-12-2011 12:00 PM

Yeah, I don't really say anything here since I'm not a paid sponsor. I try to keep everything to PM's. :c:

DieselDanBoy 12-12-2011 07:11 PM
