Cold weather fuel leak
 

Since I got this truck in 06 its had a fuel leak during the winter. I live in northern Nevada and it gets pretty cold and stays that way. Anyway, its coming from above the power steering pump (I think its the ps pump, its on lower driver side, belt driven pump). Its really hard to tell, I've seen 460s in Pintos with more room! I remember being told at the dealership years ago it wasn't that uncommon and its getting old! I'd appreciate any input that would lead to a fix.

How positive are you that it's fuel? You can't see where the fuel is coming from? I would clean it up really well and start the truck and watch for it. There isn't too many places it could be leaking fuel from. Really the only o-ring there to wear out is on the front cover of the fuel bowl where the fuel filter goes in. The only connections are the "IN" line and the "return" line on the fuel bowl there, then two lines coming off the fuel bowl and each one going to their respected head. It could be leaking off the fuel bowl somewhere, or at the connections at the head, but those use copper washers so I doubt they're leaking.

After I cleaned it up, the rag and my hand smelled of diesel fuel. I fired it up and saw clear fluid in what appeared to be a running over the pump. Oddly enough, these are the same leak investigation steps we did on F/A-18s when I was in the navy. :rocking: So although I couldn't see the leak, referring to the Coffee Table Powerstroke pub link (yes those links get used), I could see where the point of origin logically should be.

The down side is that it was leaking like this before I had to replace the filter housing after an over torque cracked it. I'm still waiting for the "we'll look back and laugh" on that one.

It only does it when its below 30* outside. Maybe I should move back to Arizona. :humm:
