6.0 programmers

since i have joined the form i keep seeing the ref to SCT programmers.
I am currently running the edge plat-juiced attitude with-out the hot unlock .
this system has in the juiced adjustable programmer i can tune the transmission-tc-lock up, shift firmness, when to shift, and a couple other things too but i cant remember, the edge has 0-5 levels plus hot #6 which are switch on the fly,
Everyone keeps saying that the SCT will tune my trans too, is this the same as what i got?
I am just getting into the truck pulling (tried it once now i am hooked) but i want a good programmer for the motor to work right and not kill it. ( i also have not done the head studs- thinking of waiting till i have signs of a leak)
I am thinking of getting a good programmer for the play time and truck pulls,(all my friends are running PPE on chevys -never seen one on a ford) but i was wondering if anyone know if i could keep the edge in and put it on stock (0) to monitor the egt, eng temp, tran temp, boost during this time , i dont want to get rid of it as i get good mileage while on mileage mode for everyday use?

On a side note does anyone know why chevys poor out the black smoke with just programmers during the truck pulls ... they make my truck look bad as i only get a little smoke with the edge on #5 ... Will a sct or ppe pour out the smoke for the people in the stands during the pulls ? (more so, to have my duramax friends have less up on me)

SCT is the top choice because it's the only one that can actually tune the trans, and one of very few that you can have custom tunes written for your truck. No, your edge doesn't do anything near what the SCT can do as far as trans tuning goes. If you can switch on the fly, your trans is NOT being tuned. The 5R110 is physically incapable of accepting tuning on the fly, the truck needs to be shut off and reprogrammed. Pouring smoke doesn't give you power. Black smoke is just unburnt wasted power in fact. Typically on a modified diesel, it will smoke until the turbo lights and ideally you want it to clean up to a slight haze, which is exactly what my tunes do. I run a few different ones on my SCT though, but most are about the same. Chevy is a completely different platform. PPE is about the 2nd best for a Chevy, EFI live being the best. SCT with custom tunes is what EFI live is to a duramax (about as close of a comparison as possible).

Your Edge will eventually kill your transmission before anything else. The REAL old Edge models had decent power, close to what SCT could do, but they ate transmissions like no ones business. So to combat this, Edge just turned the power down, which is probably what you have judging by the hardly any smoke comment. It's still not great for the trans though. It's not capable of accessing the TCM like the SCT can. Shift on the fly is a No-No for 6.0's.

You can continue to use the EDGE as a monitoring device and put the power level on 0, and then upload a custom tune via SCT.

Chevy's are also capable of a lot more power with just tuning than a 6.0, but we can get pretty close. A typical race tune with an SCT (custom tune I'm talking) is 420-430 rwhp and close to 800 ft/lbs at the wheels. A good race tune will have a torque converter lock up as well.

Ok thanks for the info! Think I am going to try and get an sct maybe next summer, I prob going to keep the edge for everyday use and for monitoring, unless some one knows
IfI can get the "biggest" "best" sct programmer and something like the edge monitor screen to watch

You can get an SCT now, doesn't really matter which model as they all hold the same tunes. Some hold custom and canned tunes, others only hold custom, so for us it don't really matter. You can still use your current Edge setup to monitor, just put the power level on 0. I know of some guys that used Edge for the power programming and uploaded a trans tune only with the SCT too, but that was with the older Edge's with more power. I still wouldn't do that. Sell the Edge, buy a used SCT from a forum or something and buy the custom tunes.

Is there a sct out there that has the same monitor
idea as my edge for the dash board? ( or a add on monitor kit)
Think i may want a , mileage , tow and wild added on tunes. I see in pics of them
they look like the ppe style of programmers which are plug in program and
unplug. Then I would Have to get more gauges or keep my edge to watch?

You can do either or. The x-cal2, or x-cal 3 and sf3 are all like the "PPE" style, plug in, program, remove.

What you want is the SCT Livewire, it is a monitor as well as a tuner. They also have the TSX which is a touchscreen, but I've heard they're flaky. They also now have Itsx which is the same idea but I believe it works with an Iphone, Itouch, or Ipad, haven't really looked into it anymore, but I'm sure it's cool.:c:

The new hot thing seems to be a handheld SCT tuner like the X-cal line, and an EDGE CTS monitor used as a monitor only.
