Bullet Proof

Ok ,so I finally got everything that I could taken care of on the truck, arp studs, gaskets, egr delete, and new oil cooler. I've been wanting sct for a while now but I've done some research and I decided to go a differnet route. I went with the the new H&S Mini Maxx tuner. What are all of your thoughts on this, i will repost in a couple of days when i get the truck back from the shop and see what the tuner is all about, I've heard nothing but good things from this tuner and I have high expectations for it. I'm just wondering if there is anybody that would no this tuner from experience and what they think of it. Thanks.

ntmdtr3fan 09-17-2011 11:59 PM

Did some reading on it and it shows NO trans tuning for the 6.0. Only for hte 6.4 and 6.7. Id confirm that with H&S before using. If it dont have a trans tune I wouldnt touch it. Other then that it does look like a nice unit. Will have to read up on any consumer reports later.

That was also my concern, I'm going to get more details when I go to pick the truck up on monday. The mechanic that's working on my truck has experience with these tuners, so hopefully he can tell me everything I need to no, after all he recomended it saying it's the best one out there, even better than sct.

Mdub707 09-18-2011 09:32 AM

He lied to you.

I would contact Mike @ KEM though, he's the guru with the H&S stuff and I know he JUST released some custom tuning for the 6.0's, but I would certainly inquire about the trans tuning.

I wont be giving up my SCT anytime soon.

ntmdtr3fan 09-18-2011 03:06 PM

On another note. SCT is roughly $350.. The H&S is almost $1000. Id take the SCT and use the extra $600 to $700 for new guages and a coolant filter.

All I can say is wow, I about put it in the ditch, going about 40 down a country road got on it and got sideway's and I about sh$t myself(btw i have 33/13.50 on my truck). Yes it has tranny tunning, much more firmer shift, when it shifts it really throws you back in your seat. I'm very impressed with this tuner, yes it is kind of expensive but man did I get my money's worth. I highly recommend this product, I can't stop smiling :tu:.

ntmdtr3fan 09-19-2011 06:18 PM

Sweet. Glad it has the trans tunes with it. Now you gotta watch the skinny pedal more often.. haha..

92 cummins 09-19-2011 06:31 PM

Yeah I'll just keep it on the mild tune for now, the truck runs suprisingly clean, not that much smoke. :tu:

Mdub707 09-20-2011 07:27 AM

So you got KEM to write custom tunes for you? I'm still not sold on the H&S having transmission tuning. Firmer shifts don't mean it's "tuned". I'm going to do my own research on this.

92 cummins 09-20-2011 03:16 PM

No I haven't got the custom tunes yet, It says Transmission Re-learning when your going through the steps of installation. I am still figureing out the set up It's pretty complicated.

Mdub707 09-21-2011 08:20 AM

Ok, I did some research on this.

The H&S stuff is adjust on the fly, which most of you know is BAD for a 6.0, since the trans is completely incapable of on the fly adjustments, it needs to be programmed.

Mike @ KEM will write custom tunes for the H&S for your 6.0, HOWEVER, you lose the adjust on the fly, for the reasons pertaining to the trans not being able to take adjustments on the fly.

H&S canned tunes like you're running, just suggest a trans re-learn for their tuning, they do NOT actually "tune" the trans like the SCT does. The custom tunes do, but again you lose the adjust on the fly.

H&S costs a LOT more than an SCT, and the ONLY person writing tunes for the H&S will be Mike @ KEM. With the SCT you have TONS of options for custom tunes...

I think that about covers it.

I would strongly suggest you get custom tunes ASAP for that thing.

I never adjust anything on the fly for that same reason you just stated, If I change power levels I do so by putting the truck in park and allowing it to re-adjust for the tune. How can I get ahold of Mike @ KEM for some custom tunning?

Mdub707 09-21-2011 08:55 PM

Home - KEM Performance, Inc. His tunes come highly recommended with the 6.4 crowd too.

Cool, thanks for the link:tu:

mudweiser1 09-21-2011 09:18 PM

Bully dog triple dog with outlook on the fly had my truck completely farted up! Was cool for awhile when I bought it but then It never ran right. Trans had no clue what was going on and eventually would not shift during hard accel from third to fourth without letting out of the pedal. Switched to SCT and all is perfect now. My vote...SCT. To each there own though.

92 cummins 09-22-2011 10:02 PM

Ehhhhh bullydog :argh yeah I've never changed power settings while driving, I know the trans dosen't care for It. I just set it on a level and leave it, and if it needs changed just throw it in park, and give it about 10 seconds. It works for me, I don't have any problem with doing It.

Mdub707 09-23-2011 12:46 PM

You might just as well change on the fly the way you're doing it now, it makes no difference. The trans will always "adapt" and learn your driving habits, whether you pull over to switch or not. In order to actually tune the trans, the truck needs to be shut off and reprogrammed). Stopping or still rolling down the road, really makes no difference in your case.

92 cummins 09-23-2011 06:11 PM

In the manual It states that they recomend performing a transmission relearn procedure after install to help the transmission perform correctly with the added horsepower. I'm going back to the shop tomorrow to find exactly what this feature is and does.

Mdub707 09-24-2011 07:12 AM

Bullydog says the same thing. They're just having you force learn the trans real quick, but in the end it really makes no difference because it's still going to shift all whacky. At least the bullydog always did in my buddies truck. The trans will act like it has no idea what it wants to do.

92 cummins 09-24-2011 11:59 PM

Well In that case, I will be going with custom tunes, but It might take a couple of weeks for me to get them considering the fact that I am very busy right now. When I get them I will post more info. Thanks

mudweiser1 09-25-2011 11:14 AM

go with the custom tunes for sure...When I bought my truck from my friend he already had the bully dog set up. He had never done the trans relearn which the booklet recommended. So i set the highest power setting and did the relearn process. The truck shifted so damn hard afterwards it seriously felt like i was going to drop a driveline or destroy the u joints within minutes. Just fyi, something to be aware of. I know your running a different programmer so ur outcome may not be the same. When I purchased the SCT programmer it was ten fold better than the Bullydog, when I purchased custom tunes from innovative I was absolutely amazed! Custom tunes 100% I even had Eric@innovative tweak a tune for me just recently and it got even better than it was the first time! I second mdub on the changing of tuning right now. Truck should be shut off, then retuned in order to switch perimeters. The trans will relearn after driving for a day or more. Best of luck! p.s. and ya, FART on BULLY DOG from experience!

Mdub707 09-26-2011 07:30 AM

Give Mike @ KEM a call. That's the only downfall to the H&S, he's the ONLY guy writing custom tunes for it. He is good though, so if you've already got the H&S I say try his tunes out and definitely let us know how you like it.

92 cummins 09-26-2011 07:30 PM

I got a hold their companys email adress, so hopefully I will hear back soon and get some custom tunes:yeah:
