06 horrible idle, dies at low speed and more!!!

I just drove home and all of a sudden after driving the truck off and on over the previous 4 hours, it starts running really rough. when i step on the gas is blows black smoke. i roll the window down and it almost sounds like an exhaust leak with the noise coming from it. it keeps running rough for about a mile and i step on it i get full turbo pressure and it clears up dramatically. the black smoke stops but it still runs rough.... so i get off the highway and head the back roads home. it dies at idle in gear at the light... cranks right back up. it dies 2 more times... cranking each time after it dies once i put it in neutral and crank it again. it idles rough as hell, loss of power but the turbo still spools up and it goes... just not like it did before. i plan to test the voltage on the fuel module in the morning after it is cooled off. cruddy week for this to happen... just sold my spare vehicle last week.... I NEED HELP PLEASE!!!

any temps rise up? does it (feel) like the injectors arnt pushin power?

esetzer 08-20-2011 11:57 PM

No noticable change in any of the guages for temp or pressures. All seemed normal there. It still will excelerate... it just doesnt like it at all. it is normally a push you in the seat truck when you hit the skinny pedal. it goes...just no real power behind it. it feels like it is missing a few cylinders the way it is acting. it is idling a bit low as well and when taken from neutral to drive it will drop a few more. I change the oil every 5K or so. Use Amsoil 15w-40. the turbo dosent seem to stick at all ever really. the black smoke cleared up after i laid into it on the highway when it all happend... but initially it blew bad black smoke. normally it will not blow black... only slight darker smoke during WOT. I will test to my Fuel control mod. in the morning and use my SCT and check for codes. nothing showed up on the dash when this happened. at idle it still sounds odd like a slight exh. leack at the head... will look for a leak in the AM as well. just at a loose with this one.

I would check the EGR valve, might be all crudded up and sticking open, it will run like crap, the egr valve is located right next to the intake elbow, only has a couple little bolts holding it down, just have to be careful prying it up, don't force it, finagle it out, little pry here and there, you might need a shopvac too,it gets real cruddy in there, use some /alot/ of brake clean to clean the valve, if you never had it out you will be supprised how crappy this thing gets, that is why alot/ myself included/ delete them or block them off completely. good luck. Bob

Just pulled codes out of it with my SCT... P0097, P0266, P2617. Any help pn what these mean and or lead too???? That still lead to an EGR Value issue? I'm about to go pull the valve this AM and see what comes of it after i clear the codes.

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

Just cleared the Codes... the P0266 always comes back if i run the engine. I pulled the EGR valve. It looked surprisingly fine... no carbon build up or chunks. no nasty crud in intake. pput it all back together. it idles with a HEAVY miss. drives and pulls with power even up hill. but it maintains the miss. only smokes when i have in in park and i rev it quick ... like normal. so no odd smoke issue... sounds and runs like shit. smells a bit funny.... but can't put a finger on it... doesn't smell like coolant being burnt... i know that smell. Any more ideas? I'm about it give up and pay the dealer and hope i dont get raped.

error code P0266 Cylinder 2 Contribution/Balance Fault

esetzer 08-21-2011 01:27 PM

Yea... I found that with google... what does that really mean when i get that code?

P0097 is Air Intake temp sensor 2 circuit high/ low input/short to ground/faulty PCM

P0266 Cylinder 2 contribution/balance code

P2617 crankshaft position sensor

The intake temp sensor I'm not too sure about... don't see that code too often. I would just check the wiring going to it, and if it's ok, replace the sensor. I'm not sure how this would/could affect the truck, if it would defuel or anything of the sort with funny readings.

Your P0266 sounds like a dead injector, and could very well be causing your issues here.

The P2617 is most likely showing up from you cranking so much. It's quite common when truck dies and someone tries to restart it over and over you'll get the crankshaft position sensor code and the camshaft position sensor code.

Tough call with these codes here. I'd really like to know what your fuel pressure is while driving down the road, and it'd be nice to get it on a scanner and check ICP (desired vs. actual).

Thanks Mdub, I will try to pull some of that info with my SCT if i can. I plan to go over the wiring harness this AM with the engine cool first. then try the SCT some. if i cant find something today i will be forced to put it to the dealer.... You'd think a good 6.0 tech in San Diego would be easy to find... but not so much. so dealer raping might end up being the course of action i'm afraid.

Mdub707 08-22-2011 11:49 AM

If you have a labtop you can download SCT's "livelink" software and then datalog with your SCT Tuner using the labtop. You could check your ICP doing that.

FWIW, it's nearly impossible to find a good 6.0 tech anywhere! :c:
