2005 F350 6.0L Turbo Diesel crank/no start
I'm working a 2005 F350 6.0L Turbo Diesel. My issue is Cranks/no start. Up to now I have canceled out the batteries, alternator, starter for being the problem as well as intake components and any sensor associated with that. I understand volumn is different from pressure, but when I remove the fuel line running to the injectors, fuel sprayed out, so I am probable to have pressure there. My FICM was replaced 9 NOV 2010, so I would expect that not to be the case. The vehicle has 29,000 miles on it, but it's a hard load considering I'm currently deployed to the middle east, and the military works these vehicles to the full potential. I preform an injector buzz test on this vehicle and it passed. The only thing I'm stuck on is wether or not my problem lies in the HPOP, I'm also stuck on the fact that I could be the IDM, ICP, or IPR. I suspect it's the HPOP but don't know for sure - as I would rather replace a sensor. I checked for a leak using the 10-15 psi technique and heard no significant air leaks, but is it possible the pump just seized?
They memory codes that popped for the vehicle were for the fuel pump circut low, all the glow plugs on the driver side low, and TPS low in circut. Note: considering it's around 120° F here, I would assume the glow plugs aren't need for starting conditions. Any help on this matter would be helpful. |
When it's cranking are you getting any smoke out the exhaust at all?
If yes, I will have more questions, If no, the injectors are not even firing and I would test the FICM first since it's the quickest easiest thing to rule out, if that passes it is probably a high pressure oil leak or a bad HPOP. What are you using to test with and run codes? AE? IDS? Something else? No IDM's on these trucks, the FICM is the IDM. IDM is 7.3 (injector driver module) FICM is 6.0 (fuel injection control module.) Could be ICP, try unplugging it and see whta happens, it will usually start, but not run or drive great this way. Let me know if you have smoke first or not though. |
I think the key here is that is an "05" and 29000 military miles is about 120k in reality, they let them idle alot to use up our tax money,,, most likely just the sct fitting on the hpop, with those ambient temps it would be the same as no hot start, this is probably the most common things on 05s. good luck and be safe over there.

Thanks guys, so far that helps me lean more towards the HPOP and gives me a more definite choice. No exhaust, btw and no fuel smell around the engine block or dripping out the exhaust. So I'll have your second take on my problem and say it's a problem with my injection process. Now remembering my injectors passed a buzz test, I was leaning toward a possible HPOP failure, should I stick with this or would it be wise to examine the screen in the IPR.... I read somewhere. Don't remember though, that if the screen in the IPR was broken or sludged the pump would be faulty too, Is this correct? Or do I need to be looking else where. I am using an AutoEnginuity Scan tool as well. I already tried to unplug the ICP but that didn't work. And the FICM checks out.

Yep, 05 have the notoriously worst HPOP. Pull the IPR and inspect the screen if it's full of metal shavings, it's time to replace the HPOP.

Hey thanks guys that was the problem!!! The filter screen in the IPR valve was cracked and bent in. So I have a couple of things to order on that vehicle. I'm starting a new thread on another '05, if you guys could add on that one it would be awesome.

Stosch, were you pulling any codes with the IPR? I am having similiar problems with my 03 and I am leaning towards the IPR but I have no codes.

nope, no codes, the IPR valve is romote and I don't think a code exists for it, that's why it's a hard situation to troubleshoot. Remember if the screen is broken, it usually means debris got into your HPOP as well, so you might want to look into that.

IPR is a valve, not a sensor, so it probalby wont throw a code regardless. The ICP may recognize it and throw a code, but I'm not sure on that.

IPR can throw a code but only under pretty specific situations, so you very seldom see one that codes. Had an 04 with a no hot restart and the screen had popped off the end of the valve, got a new valve just for good measure tho.
