Programmer or chip for increasing fuel economy
 

I have a 2007 6.0 Powerstroke F350. What would be the best chip or programmer I could purchase to increase fuel economy? I am driving to Cali from texas in two weeks and then to michigan, new york, south carolina, back to texas, and then to oklahoma and back. I really appreciate the help.

Keep your foot out of it and use cruise control is going to be your best "Program"
They have some economy tunes out there but from what i hear there is no noticeable change.

The best tunes for mileage are the hottest tunes you can get with a torque converter lockup, so any race tune using an SCT with custom tunes. They yield the best, but I wouldn't mod for mileage myself. Mod for power, and then if you gain some milage, be happy.

Economy tunes are a waste IMO.

Ruger is right, just take 5mph off your normal speed and you'll see an increase. Try to stay at or under 2k rpms the whole time, it's the sweet spot. :c:

yeah, don't even bother with an economy tune. i have one and i wish i had a race tune in place of it. i run the same thing most people on here run, SCT tuner with Innovative Diesel custom tunes. i use the extreme street tune all the time. i can drive like an old man or like a kid and get the same mileage (within .5 mpg). the more power the better mileage at normal speeds. the SCT tuner will hold 3 tunes of your choice. the only thing i don't like about mine is you have to shut down and re-program for switching between tunes (takes about 8 min.). some tuners shift-on-the-fly, a buddy of mine has one of those and its pretty nice to be able to change it while driving but, he's also started having tranny problems too.......:humm:

Not sure about the programs or tunes but I know cruise control can hurt you mpg if you do it wrong, on the flat it works great, but in the hills it will kill your fuel mileage, when you drive without cruise control when you hit a hill or high spot in the road you normally hold the same throttle position and loose a few mph, say 5 mph if your going 70, then gain 8 or so on the down hill side, that puts you up to 73, then you level back at 70, lost some gained some, cruise control forces the truck to hold that steady 70 mph pouring more coal to the fire. I have tested this on many trips going cross country, on the flats it great, but not so much for the hills or bumps in the road.

On the fly tuning is a no-no for 6.0's. There's a reason we're using the programmers that have to be shut off and reprogrammed, this is the ONLY way to make changes to the transmission. On the fly doesn't do anything for trans, and thus why your buddy is having issues.

On an 03/04 truck, reprogramming takes a little over 5 minutes, on 05+ it's about 2 minutes. 8 minutes would be drinking a beer, topping off coolant and checking oil in between. :tttt:
