gotta talk dirty to her to get er to start

Ok I'm getting tired of having to talk to this big sucker like a dog to get it to start.

It starts "ok" when cold, or driving for less then an hour. If I driving it for over an hour, kill it, then try to start it back up within an hour, it takes around 20 seconds for cranking. It fires and then idles fine. no smoke, all filters just changed. I used my dads meter to check the ficm, and it read 64 volts...... so I'm assuming his meter is a dud. So I need to get my multimeter back from my friend and recheck it I guess.

The message center on the dash says the oil pressure is ok. I'll unpack my sct tommorrow and check for codes. I'll be getting an edge insight next week so it might help me out alittle.

So what else can I check into?

Mdub707 04-29-2011 07:18 AM

64 volts? What the heck?

Usually when they have issues starting hot and not cold it's a high pressure oil leak somewhere.

Could be the STC fitting (snap to connect) on the HPOP, they're pretty notorious for failing, and there is an upgrade for it.

Little Luke 04-29-2011 09:49 AM

Yeah, 64 volts, screw the 58volt hot mod:yeah:
yeah, I would imagine the little $10 meter isn't real good, I'll test it again sunday and get the real readout with my meter.

So, the fix it list keeps getting longer:choochoo::argh:

I know it's discouraging, but think about those poor guys who don't know any better and aren't on the forums. At least you're here learning and trying to get it squared away.

let us know how you make out on that FICM. If it's dead or dying, shoot me a PM.

Little Luke 04-29-2011 02:46 PM

yeah...... funny thing is I bought this thing because I was tired of working on my f150 with its 5.4 v8 every weekend..... I actually went to change the oil in my dads excursion with a v10 in it last weekend....... so much space under the hood...... felt kinda good working on something that I knew inside and out.... oh well, Always wanted to learn about ford's diesels anyway, guess this is my chance.:humm:

ok, this is pissing mme off now. I though she just laid down on me at my buddies shop. I killed it for 20 minutes, it like to have never started back up. Lets go on and assume it is my hpop. will this be something I've got access to while doing my delete and cleaning the turbo? how can I tell if it is the pump that has gone bad, or if it the stc fittings. Or is this just one of these things if I'm in there replace it anyway. I've read about an upgraded cover, what about that. I just want to get my ducks in a row before I get into this. Only one more night of class then this thing goes up to my shop.

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

ok, one other thing, The icp sensor, I've read it would cause a hard restart, anyway to check it? Or am I getting off track?

bismic1 05-05-2011 03:47 AM

The 2006 pumps do not fail very often, I wouldn't just replace it. The STC fiting, the dummy plugs, and the standpipes are good items to replace. After that, I bet you are good to go. Check the IPR while you are into it. If the screen is not torn or deformed, it should be good.

Mdub707 05-05-2011 07:05 AM

Agreed. The HPOP will be easy to get to while doing an EGR delete as you're about 90% of the way there, but if it's not broke, don't fix it. Get it hooked to a scanner if you're concerned about it.

biged681985 05-05-2011 08:43 AM

while u can get to the ipr easier, go ahead and pull it, and see if there is any metal shavings on the screen, if there is, the hpop is worn. best way to find a high pressure oil leak is to have someone with a scanner that can shut the ipr off, is have it closed, pull the icp, put the correct size adapter in it with an air fitting on the other side, and use compressed air and the listen for air leaks

Well, the previous owner of the truck stopped by. He heard I was having issues with it. I explained what it was doing and he told me it started acting like this after the local dealer reflashed it under warrenty. He had called the dealer back and told him the issues and he told him that was normal for that truck, which is the same crap they fes me. This add any clues or should I just stick with the STC fiting, the dummy plugs, and the standpipes?

I had my tools stolen, So I just picked up another 400 piece set, not half of what I had, but it'll get me by for now.
Oh, and that wrench light came one again today while cruising home.... not under a load, just cruising at about 60 mph. I pulled over, hooked up my sct, and nothing. when I got home, I shut her off, turned the key, no light, cranked and started like a champ. I came back 10 minuted later and tried to start it, same crap, 15 crank time.

Mdub707 05-12-2011 02:28 PM

Keep the SCT plugged in the whole time, next time it pops up read it right away.

Sounds like BS from your dealer, and sounds like the last owner didn't really know anything either.

Best bet is to scan and see what the HPOP is putting out. Or just follow the advice given in this thread, seems like some testing/researching needs to be done and there's a few tips given here that haven't been done yet. :pca1:
