High pitch sound from engine compartment

Im an owner of an 06 6.0 PS. driving down highway one afternoon and hear a high pitch noise. almost like that of a tuning fork or dog whistle. truck mainly does it when pyro is above 300 degrees. can hear it best at idle but will do it when accelerating or decelerating. turbo still boosts up great.turbo was cleaned and did not help. rubber boots have been replaced. bought a new exaust from turbo back and im still getting this annoying sound. any ideas?

I'd bet my last dollar you have a cracked up-pipe. I've had this issue before too. Makes obnoxiously loud whistle at idle, but it would kind of go away when driving and once it warmed up. Still boosted normal. It's actually not all that uncommon.

any idea where i can get one of them. and how much work does it involve to change? i have done some work on this truck but the extremely tight working space usually steers me away from doing engine work

Remove intake, take out the turbo and swap the pipe. Depends which one is cracked, usually it's the one on the passenger side that connects to the egr cooler. It's bellowed up near the top to allow flexing and it cracks right there usually. It's not a "hard" job, but it is going to be aggrivating and tedious. :pca1:

I've had this happen on my truck too, that sound is so annoying. My EGR delete came with a solid up pipe and that fixed the problem + deleted my EGR at the same time. Two birds with one kit :)

Yep that is what I would door it was the pass side up pipe.

Sandusky how many miles do you have? Is your truck no longer under warranty? I had my cracked up-pipe fixed under warranty before.

Sandusky11 03-22-2011 10:03 AM

its got 94,000 on it and warrantee is due in about a month but i have had so much trouble with ford stayin true on that stuff. when i took it to them to find out what the sound was they said it was the turbo and they couldnt cover it, even tho two days prior my egr coolers were replaced by them under warrantee. im having a kit put on for 450 parts and labor included.

ntmdtr3fan 03-22-2011 11:38 AM

actually the turbo is covered under the 100k mile warranty along with everything that involves the engine and egr/smog system. So id take to the and tell them to fix it.

Sandusky11 03-23-2011 09:33 AM

based on the people i have talked to its the up pipe and not the turbo. the turbo has been cleaned and inspected. Its just easier for me to put a delete kit on it and besides i dont want anything to do with this egr bs. everythin was better when we didnt have all this emmisions regulations.:scare2:

and the egr valve is not covered on the warrantee. basically ford is washin their hands of this 6.0 ltr even tho it could have been a great engine with the right people workin the issues

Mdub707 03-23-2011 10:06 AM

The emissions stuff including the EGR valve are covered 5yr/100k miles.

Sandusky11 03-23-2011 10:23 AM

they would not cover mine. only work i have gotten done under the 100k 5 yr is the egr coolers. they replaced the valve not even two months ago when i had it in for the coolers and they billed me 500 for the valve and install.

ntmdtr3fan 03-23-2011 12:10 PM

Take out your owners manual. Look for the warranty guide that comes with it. If you have it take it to the dealer you had do the egr. Show them page 20 . EGR systems (everything related to EGR) is covered under the 5 year 100k warranty. And get your money back.

If they still fail to resolve the issue then you can contact

What do those valves run new? They're only 2 bolts and one electrical plug right on top of the motor to swap out (though some stick pretty good) it's still not hard to get them out. $500 is absurd. I'm sure you had a $100 deductible charge in there too, but still.

ntmdtr3fan 03-23-2011 01:34 PM

part# 9F452 (CX-2020)
EGR Backpressure Valve
6.0L OHV Diesel V8 ; Only Use Stock With Package Date Of 060808 Or Later $230.77

Thats what I found from Ford Dealership. May find it alot cheaper online. Must have added the $100 deduct and labor charges. No idea why it would be $500.

Sandusky11 03-30-2011 02:04 PM

the excuse was that because the valve had not failed due to a defect of some sort it was not covered. they said it was in need of replacement due to clogging or build up somethin along those lines. and i couldnt believe the thing was 500 either but thats what my bill said and what i paid unfortunately, i will have to dig the bill out of my files and figure out how they broke it up. ordered a delete kit for it and im debating on whether to do it my self or pay a mechanic. i will post on here if the problem is corrected or not. hopefully i wont have to post the latter lol. thanks alot!

I recieved a check from Ford for $100 because they charged me deductable for warranty work wich turns out to be illegal, all emissions related components are 5yr 100k/ fed law, if they replaced egr valve they eat the cost

Mdub707 03-30-2011 09:59 PM

If that was the case, I should have got a few hundred bucks from Ford! HA, yeah right. You're lucky!

ntmdtr3fan 03-30-2011 11:05 PM

Ford refunded my deductible twice so far. And last time there they actually charged me $87 for a fuel pressure regulator. Even though thats also covered under the 5yr/100k miles warranty. At least thats what it says in the warranty info in the manual I think.

Sandusky11 04-11-2011 05:54 AM

got the sinister delete kit installed on the truck. sound went away everything seems to be functioning well. happy with the kit. appreciate the help
