black smoke

I cleaned the egr on my 04 6.0 and now when i start off it blows out black smoke. It didnt do this before. I dont have a programmer on it just exhaust. Is this normal?

Could be carbon being blown out due the the egr valve being stuck closed before you cleaned it was it stuck?

? it did have a lot of carbon on and in it. I was having problems with it idleing very rough in the mornings so I took the egr out and cleaned it good. It runs a lot better now and idles smother. I also ordered some revx and it should be here today. Im going to change my oil tonight and add that and see if that helps. I was just wondering if the smoke was normal on a stock 6.0. Thanks

Stock 6.0 should have NO black smoke what so ever.

Black smoke is just unburnt fuel, SO, this means you're not getting all the air you need. How is the air filter? Usually if it's that bad, the check air filter light will be on on the dash. Check over your intercooler boots with a fine tooth comb. They can and do crack and develop leaks. 03/04 were more prone to this. Definitely give them a good once over. Next step is to take the turbo out and clean it. There is a reconditioning process posted on the "diesel technicians socitety" website on cleaning a 6.0 turbo, very good write up, and anyone can do this, its' quite simple. The veins in the turbo often become caked with soot and will stick and not spool properly. Being you have an 04, you don't have a boost gauge either (unless you put one in) so it'd be hard to tell. Start with checking the boots, then clean the turbo. I bet one of these is your issue.:c:

Thanks. My air filter is fine and i do have an auto meter boost gauge. It reads from 10psi at 1800 rpms and goes up to 25-30 if you get on it hard. But it didnt have any black smoke until I took the egr out and cleaned it. Thats what has me stumped. Thanks again..

Also i have replaced the boot on the pressure side of the turbo but not the two at the intercooler but I will do that tonight also.

Did you replace the 2 O Rings on the EGR valve? When ever you clean the eg you should always replace the O rings. Could have some blow by. But then again Id think it would be white smoke if you had blow by within the EGR.

No i didnt replace the o rings i did clean them and inspect them and they both looked good. I will replace those also. I put between 5 and 7 thousand miles per month and cant do with out my truck for too long so I need to make sure its nothing major asap. Thanks

O ring you can get at your local dealerships. They run about 6$ to 9$ for the pair. Other then taht I couldnt tell you what it is. But Id go with what Mdub says. It sounds like unburnt fuel. Have only had my 07 f350 6.9 a year now. Still learing alto fo them and most of everything I have learned has come from this site. :rocking:
