egr delete

iv seen alot of guys on here saying stuff about egr deletes and im just wondering what it is and what the egr does ?

MUDSTROKIN' 03-07-2011 02:40 PM

Exhaust Gas Recirculation. Puts your exhaust back into your intake. So your truck is pretty much eating its own Chit. And the EGR cooler cools the gasses before they enter your intake. The cooler often ruptures which leads to headgasket failure. My suggestion is delete it

BigRig515 03-07-2011 03:57 PM

thank ya and im lookin in to it :tu::c:

Mdub707 03-08-2011 12:56 PM

Yep, just keep reading around. This topic gets discussed on almost a daily basis. Lots of good info here already! :c:

BigRig515 03-08-2011 04:05 PM

is there a specific one you would suggest ?

crzycummins 03-08-2011 04:29 PM

river city diesel...bulletproof diesel...sinister mfg...bd diesel, theres a bunch out there.

BigRig515 03-09-2011 10:07 AM

is this something i can do or does it need to be done by a shop ?

Mdub707 03-09-2011 10:17 AM

Depends how mechanically inclinded you are. It's really not a tough job at all, it is however, time consuming. Plan a FULL day to do it. More time will be needed if you choose to have your intake manifold hot-tanked or cleaned in some sort of way. Not a necessity, but if you're already in there....

It's really pretty simple job though. You may want an extra set of hands for a few parts, like removing the bolts on the up-pipe. Nice to have someone under the truck holding wrench or ratched, with someone up on top of motor holding the other end.

If I was you and did a egr delete and your try k has any kind of millage on it and if you don't have a coolant filter I would replace the oil cooler with the new stainless steel oil screen you are over half way there when you do a egr delete and you wont ever need to worrey about it again if you put a coolant filter on.

I agree with ranger, and while ur at it pull the ipr valve out n replace the screen on it.:tu:

Most shops will not install EGR deletes in Polution controled states now. But if you live where its not a problem then ask around. Im sure you can find one somewheres that will install it.
Just from experience here in Cali. I asked a couple shops if they would install a Bullit proof egr delete. They said no and looked at me like I was some weirdo.

Just wondering if a egr block is as effective as a egr delete? That what I've had done egr block.

Mdub707 03-10-2011 08:00 AM

Depends what you're talking about. There are two parts to this, the EGR valve and the EGR cooler. Most full delete kits get rid of both. Just blocking the EGR valve off doesn't do much for the cooler, it can and will still rupture.

I used the "sneaky pipe" method for my EGR delete. This requires removal of the EGR up-pipe which connects the passenger side exhaust to the turbo Y-pipe. On this pipe is a short "T" that connects to the EGR cooler. You can cut the "T" off or just weld a disc inside. IF your model year truck (IIRC '05-'07) has the scoop inside you can remove this as well to help with exhaust flow to the turbo. Since these trucks have a PCM you may trip a soft code or CEL due to "Low EGR Flow" or something along those lines. Using an SCT you can have the EGR function limited and preventing the code or CEL. You don't need to run a performance tune to use the SCT. Just tell the tuner what you need the tuning to do and they will set it up.

There are other options as listed above. It just depends on how deep you want to go. I was still under warranty and wanted it to look stock. I have a full on delete version to install, I just need some warm temps to get it done.

But if it ruptures who cares it will all be contained in there right. It can't get into the intake.

It will still have a free flowing path to the exhaust, and you can bet it will still find it's way into the intake.

The only way to prevent this is to either delete the cooler, or just weld freeze plugs on both ends, that way if it does rupture it just fills the cooler and doesn't go anywhere.

Stumblefoot 03-13-2011 01:19 PM

found a place that does the whole intake manifold, EGR delete and all. but lost the website, it was expensive, but I would like to find it again, anybody?:humm:

That what I'm talking about that's what I have the freeze plugs in.

Mdub707 03-14-2011 07:55 AM

Ok gotcha!

GoGo or FCDP both have deletes that utilize mods to the intake manifold.

Strokethis04 03-15-2011 01:52 PM

i have a 04 6.0 can i just unplug the EGR or will it cause problems? Also i have a Hyper Tech max Energy programmer.

Mdub707 03-15-2011 03:02 PM

You can unplug it if you want. You may or may not get a check engine light. If you do, only way to get rid of it is plug it back in or get an SCT with custom tunes. Usually the 03/04 trucks don't get the light, but I have seen some 04's do it. It can also still just blow open under normal use without even being plugged in. Only real way to fix this problem is to get it off the truck.:rocking:

Strokethis04 03-15-2011 05:04 PM

If i just completely take out the EGR What do i do to cover that hole? and how much money are we talking about roughly.

I ordered kit on ebay for around 650$ shipped to canada from florida and it came with block off plates for cooler gasket set for everything u remove to get at it a performance programmer that goes on ur laptop with shuts off light reads engine codes too it also came with new oil cooler which needs to be removed during the process so i replaced it i was told by many that plugged oil coolers r common.
I am very happy with my setup :)
