Amsoil or FS2500?
I've got an opportunity to get either of these kits that were previously used, but in good condition. The Amsoil kit is a little cheaper than the FS2500, but I'm more interested in the long-term benefit of each.
So, which way should I go? I'm leaning more towards the FS2500, but I'm looking for input, pros/cons, from people who have used both. |
I think they are both similar in effectiveness. I think cost and availability are the difference. I'm not familiar with where you get the FS or it's replacement fiters. How often do you have to change that one and how much are they? The amsoil can be left on for two oil changes. The purpose of the bypass is to extend your intervals so hopefully you'll be going 15-20k on an interval so the filter will last you 30-40.
I can get you a replacement cost on the amsoil filter if you like. Just a couple things to keep in mind. |
That's been one of the factors I've been evaluating. The Amsoil filter is $40+ each filter change. The FS2500 is $26 each filter change. I think they get changed out at similar intervals.
The FS2500 gets a new filter every 10,000 miles. According to the rep, the average is 30,000 miles per oil change. With the FS2500 you don't need to change the primary filter until the oil has reached its serviceable life. I don't intend on using it in this manner. I will most likely change the oil at 10,000 mile intervals, when the FS2500 needs a new filter. I like the FS2500 setup ... it's very clean and the filter is well protected underneath the truck. The Amsoil hangs down a tad, behind the transfer case and doesn't seem to have the same protection. ---AutoMerged DoublePost--- Well, I've decided on the FS2500. AMSOIL says you should change the filter every OTHER primary oil filter change, but it's kinda up to you. These filters can run various intervals depending on use. In the semis, they can run up to 60k. In these trucks, as I mentioned earlier, you could run it up to 30-40, but if changing every 7500, then I might stop at 3x or 22500 or so.
You won't cause any problems if you go to far, the flow will just decrease. It doesn't affect how the oil flows to your primary. |
Does Amsoil consider an oil change being done when your oil analysis determines it's time? So, hypothetically, if at 15,000 miles my oil analysis says it's time to change, then I can do an oil change and run the same Amsoil filter until my oil analysis says it's time again ... maybe another 15K?
I'm not wanting to use the system that way. Obviously, I'm not going to invest this money and change oil every 3k, but maybe double that. I just want to maintain a clean source of oil, so that I don't have injector issues down the road. Who else is running an Amsoil system in this way? What has been your experience, as far as bypass filter longevity? |

The oil filter has to be change because it is what takes out the crap from the oil, AMSOIL says that you can use their oil for up to 16,000 miles but you must change the oil fitler! At least the is what I was told!

Well, I've spent the day researching the oil shearing issue with the 6.0 and found some really interesting information. It appears that the fuel injection system likes to shear the oil down from 40 weight to a 30, within 5-7k miles ... doesn't matter if it's synthetic or dino. However, if you use a CJ-4, 10w30 oil, like Rotella T5, there is almost no shear and the oil change interval can be extended. There are a few posts on various sites that discuss oil analysis reports related to these oils. Users are reporting a smoother, quieter engine and some have reported their injector stiction issues have cleared up.
I think I'm going to try the Rotella T5 in my next oil change, when I install the Amsoil bypass. At 5k miles, I'll pull a sample and have it tested. From there, I'll determine if I'll try extending OCI. Everything I've read sounds very promising! |
I use the amsoil setup and run the amsoil, they have a oil made for the extended oil changes. I have 230k on my 04-6.0 and I change the primary filter every 10k and the bypass filter every oil change at 25k, I have benn doing this sinse I had 75k on the truck and have had no issues with bad injectors, my truck has mods and is run in race mode on the Edge juice with att. all the time,better mileage. JMO

Bobfbigman, what oil do you use? What has your oil analysis showed, as far as shearing is concerned?
Everything I've read says the oil shears down to a 30 weight within 5000-7500 miles, regardles if you're using a bypass or not. According to others, who have religiously followed their oil life through oil analysis, the 40 shearing to a 30 affects the chemistry of the oil. That is the reason they began running 10w30. After the same miles traveled, there was little to no change in the viscosity or chemistry of the oil. Based on their research, it has been decided that, for extending oil change intervals, using 10w30 is a much wiser choice. |
I use series 3000 5w-30 for the colder months, the oil they reccomend for extended oil changes and mileage
