transmission or torgue converter sound?
My dad has an 04 crew cab f-250 4x4 with a 6.0 that is completely stock with only 66,000 miles and it is making a strange whoosh whoosh whoosh sound when it shifts gears. it s an automatic by the way. He said it seems to happen more when its cold out and sometimes doesnt happen at all. he said it tends to be worst when he pulls his 20 ft trailor with mowers on it. It doesnt seem to be slipping at all just making that sound. Any ideas anyone? Thanks
There may be a TSB with a reflash IIRC. Lifting the go pedal a bit at shifts will also help if thats truly the noise your hearing. The noise could be louder due to an aftermarket intake or a blown off intake hose. could also be a air to air hose but you would notice power loss.
Just a note, I've also heard this complaint due to stuck veins in the charger

Could be turbo fart, but you wouldn't hear that if you stay on the skinny pedal, it's usually only when you stomp on it then let off real fast. It's not an issue if that's what it is, it's common.
These turbos don't ever really have surge issues, 7.3's were notorious for that. It could be, but not common. Need more info
66,000 is not many miles at all for a 6.0 of that year, does it sit a lot? Is he getting any smoke out of the truck on start up or even while driving? If so what color is it? Has a scanner been hooked up to try and read codes?

it did sit for a while hence the 66k miles. but it doesnt smoke or anything just all the sudden decided to make that sound. no lights or anything on so no we havent scanned it. we have a scanner so maybe we should hook it up
Letting these trucks sit for extended periods of time isn't good, that's why I asked. Turbo vanes get rusty and start sticking, and weird turbo issues happen. Probably wouldn't get a code for it anyways. Might be worth doing the turbo reconditioning and clean that thing up. I bet there is some sort of rust build up on it. The procedure/write up has been posted here numerous times. Just read around. It's easy and basically free. Just plan an afternoon to do it.
