Default Ford f250 4x4 question

i have a 2004 f250 diesel crew cab fx4 6.0

the 4x4 works fine if i have the hubs locked manually but if i leave them in auto and switch it to 4wd it will not engage. i see vaccium hoses going to the hubs, but have no idea were to start looking. can some body point me in the right direction.
thanks

How long do you try for them to kick in 4x4? Takes mine a bit to kick in and if its not much i need to go straight to locking them.

It won't hurt it if you go about hundred feet to give some time to engage, if that dont not work the Im not to sure my old truck the vaccium seals would always break after winter but that truck was a beast.

could be the vacuum seals as mentioned already... mine does the same thing... I just use the manual to lock them when I need them...

tryin going forwards then backwards a couple times... go bout 50-75 feet... if that doesnt work trace the vacuum hose... look for any cracks or splits...

Default vacuum

if the heater and e/c is not blowing out the defroster only then you have vacuum .... this is because the vacuum pump also makes the doors move. Usually the solenoid on the passenger fender will go out and dump the vacuum but if you can still move the air from floor to vent to defroster then the solenoid is ok and not dumping vacuum.... unless someone has plugged the line to th solenoid to make the doors work......

here is what i found; when i have it in heat everything moves were is suppose to, but when i turn the **** to cold and swith to ac/max it works fine untill i turn the 4wd **** to 4h then the vents switch to defrost by it self.
what does this means? solenoid?

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

i also found that the vacuum hose that comes from the hubs conects to the heater control valve, i dont think this is right. right? then next to the solenoid there is like a map sensor. it has 2 vacuum hoses, and one or them is not conected to anytning. is this right?
is there anywere that i can get a vacuum diagram for this two things.
does any one has a pic of how their vacuum hoses are conected just in that area?
