rotella

Just had an oil change done on my truck. Found some Shell Rotella 5w-40 for $13 a gallon. Figured that was pretty cheap so I bought a few extra gallons for next change. Not sure what it usualyl goes for but if its a good deal then try Pepboys. Hvaing a sale right now. Can only buy 4 gallons at one time. But go back the enxt day and get 4 more.

Old oil i was puching the treashold for milage. Right about 7k. Ford recommends 7500 miles. I usually have it changed at 5k miles. Had the tech save a little oil so i could see what it looked like. Stuck my finger in it and it ran off like it was water. Very thin. Think I could have hurt anything with it being like that?

Truck is just a daily driver with no mods but a 4 inch exhaust.

I say don't push your intervals with this motor, I use the Rotella T-6 and I go 5000 or less.
I get my oil at WallyWorld and it is just under $20 a gallon. Oil is cheap in the long run compared to repairs on these trucks.

Don't go more than 5k on oil changes, I don't care what Ford recommends or what the oil company recommends. Clean oil is vital to the way these trucks run.

Yeah It wasnt my intention to go voer 5k miles or get close to 7k. But a situation came up and I wasnt able to get the truck in any sooner. I know about the horror stories of the Hpop going and or injectors going because of dirty oil. Its a chance I wont take again. It runs good other then when I first take off in the morning. Sometimes it just ahs no power. But when its warmed up it runs fine. Still have to take it into Ford this week for possible EGR cooler failure. NO leaks that I can find but the Degas bottle is now just below the MIN line. Inside EGR looks like wet tar. Matter of fact. guess since i got the day off and dont need to do anything Im gonna take it in now.

Sounds like an EGR cooler failing for sure.

i have been using the Rotella T6 in summer and the Ford supper duty oil 10/30 winter
change the oil every 5000 Miles also...

Have been changing the trany paper filter every 25,000:tu:

Out of curiosity, why would you run T6 5W-40 in the summer and a 10W-30 in the winter? Why not run the 5W-40 year round?

jimrd 02-16-2011 08:28 AM

i use to run the Rotella year round.....

then i spoke to my local diesel mechanic and he told me that the rotella sticks the fuel injectors in the winter....it has been -20 C in ontario this winter

so i changed the oil to the oem Ford Super duty oil...

Mdub707 02-16-2011 08:38 AM

Well when you ran it year round did you notice anything? I'd take that mechanics advice with a grain of salt.

deucer 02-16-2011 08:55 AM

T6 being a synthetic and lower viscosity oil, I would doubt you would have sticking injectors, unless you changed the oil at 10k, but I'm not a diesel mechanic either...
