EGR or Oil Cooler?

my truck is a f-350 6 speed, on friday the 7th of jan started having problems gettin up to speed and blowin mass amounts of white and blue smoke, i was told that is was the egr valve, egr cooler, and oil coolerand that my turbo was dirty. i looked on line and read alot about the egr delete kits (want more advice about them please) they sound like a good product and would do good for my truck adding horsepower and engine reliability. i do use my truck for pulling goose neck trailers (all types, flat beds with cars, and box), horse trailers, vehicles, and long hauls (from south dakota to indiana) for my spare job. ive also ready about the new egr coolers with the metal or aluminum tubing.. sounds alot better than the factory models. i was wonderin which would b better and how i could diagnose the problem further to possibly pin point the issue. im also looking for a place to get a quality product at a reasonable price.

Before you are going to install an oil cooler(the good ones are expensive) you need to check the real temperatures in the engine..
Because temperatures like very high temperaures as very low temperatures aren't good. Especially temperatures below 176°F cause a lot of wear by friction.

So check your real numbers first.
A good sized cooler unit will take 20°F of your heat, so when you drive in the average range this can be to cold for you.

During winter I have deleted the oil cooler- it's simply to cold and not necessary.
Setrab and Aeroquip are trusted brand good enough for the pro and military.

Deleting the EGR will raise the combustion temperature during part throttle only, because around 7% more fresh air is delivered. It is simple to explain- burned air can't be burned again. During full load the EGR is closed anyway.

thanks..so i can go ahead and get the egr delete kit and b fine.. no issues.

im not 100% sure which was wrong, they just said that my oil cooler was cloggin up and my egr valve was sticking and my egr cooler was clogged up, but it ran just fine when i drove it home from the shop cause i wanted to research and see what was wrong before i paid the price they said i had to. as far as i know..i could only have to change one thing..

Hmmm, an oil cooler clogging up?
Your truck is only 5 years old? How can that happen? neglected oil change intervals?

EGR cooler and EGR valve are different. I can tell you-they do clogg up!

i know..i questioned the guy when he talked about my oil cooler being bad. i change my oil every 3000 miles and put new fuel and oil filters in it.

ive already confirmed i am goan replaced the egr cooler with an egr delete kit.

Deezel Stink3r 01-11-2011 04:35 PM

modern oils are designed to keep particles enclosed in the oil, not allowing them to cover nocks and crannies.
What kind of oil do you use?

I change every 6000miles (syn oil and factory recommandation) and the oil pan is so clean that you could eat of it.

Have a look into the intake manifold, too(Check for soot).

floyd1 01-11-2011 05:03 PM

summer time i use the light weight oil like the owners manual says..10w30 and in the winter i usually go with 15w40.

No i have not looked into the intake man.

Oil cooler clogging is a common problem on the 6.0. It is what causes you egr to fail. Take a look at the ford 6.0 sub section.

floyd1 01-15-2011 08:27 PM

where do i go to find the ford 6.0 sub section?

Yes clogged oil coolers happens often on these. I don't really agree with much that deezl stink3r has said honestly. The factory blocks are sand cast, over time the sand deposits break off the block and get stuck in the oil cooler. The oil coolers main function is to regulate the temp between oil and coolant. When it clogs, the coolant can't flow through enough and will start flash boiling and eventually lead to a failed EGR cooler (causes tons of white smoke), and eventually headgasket issues...

Without more info it's hard to say what exactly is wrong with your truck, but an EGR delete is a good idea. River City Diesel has the cheapest full delete setups, found on ebay. You can get them as low as $175 shipped, if you wait for one of their "less expensive" auctions and do the make an offer. For top quality kits, FCDP or GoGo diesel. Both require a core as they mod the intake manifold and they're near $600. (without core).

Being that you have an 05, more than likely if you do an EGR delete, you will get a check engine light for insufficient EGR flow, so you will need to purchase an SCT programmer with custom tuning from someone like Eric @ Innovative Diesel, Doug @ GoGo, Matt @ Gearhead (you can search for tuning options) and get a tune, as they will have the EGR function turned off, so the light will stay off. If you don't want to add power, they can do a stock tune with the EGR function off too.

Without more info or the truck in front of us, this is about the best we can do. Delete the EGR valve/cooler with a good kit (I use the RCD kit myself...) and replace the oil cooler and see what happens I guess...

it was around 37 degrees and i took off from a stop sign and white smoke just barreled out the tail pipe. i took forever to shift from first to second, the problem continued going from second to third and third to fourth. the engine acted like it didnt get enough fuel and air mix to power the truck forward. i then drove the truck to ford diesel and they told me that my egr cooler, egr vlave, oil cooler all were bad. it will run fine when it decides to. im using sinister diesel parts to fix the problems

Mdub707 01-17-2011 11:42 AM

Just so you know the RCD kits are the same as the sinister since they're copies of each other, but the RCD kits are less expensive...

floyd1 01-17-2011 11:45 AM

oh. :tu: i didnt know that. thank you

Keep looking on ebay. They'll haev 5 kits for $300 on there, but then all of a sudden one for $200 or $250 will show up and it will have the "make an offer" button... then make an offer. I got mine for $185 shipped. I've heard of them as low as $175 shipped. Mine came with a free t-shirt too. Or the t-shirt was $150 and the EGR delete was $35!? :c:

floyd1 01-17-2011 01:51 PM

hahah..thanks..i dont know how to operate ebay tho, im not very smart on the whole internet operations yet..lol yes im young but i dont work with technology, i work with my hands majority of the time. but i will try and learn ebay

Mdub707 01-17-2011 03:05 PM

Keyboard and mouse are hand tools! Just learn how to use em!:tttt:

floyd1 01-26-2011 07:30 PM

well, i installed the egr delete kit.....runs like a champ.

Rcrawler 01-29-2011 10:03 AM

My truck just started to have the exact same problems, poor shifting (1-2-3), smoke, & power loss until it’s driven for a couple of blocks and warmed up. I have not noticed and coolant loss yet; curious what kit you when with and did you replace the oil cooler ?Loads of info out there but not exactly sure of the real problem yours sounds very simalar to mine.

floyd1 01-29-2011 11:04 AM

i researched my issue for 2 months..then found this website. i went through mkm customs, and got the mkm complete solution $2099.00... its pricey but u get everything u need..bettter seals, egr delete kit, oil cooler. air intake, and exhaust.. i get better fuel mileage and my truck runs amazing..no worries. im lookin at puttin studs in to replace the bolts on the manifolds..

the complete sinister egr delete kit, up pipe, new turbo mounting bolts, seals, and step by step instructions with pics, with 2 day shipping and everything is about $336.00. if u follow the instructions and have all the tools and a buddy..u should have no worries gettin it doen in 8 hrs. i did mine(mostly by myself) in 7.5

better act fast casue if u run it like that long enough..u wont b going anywhere..
