Do I have a turbo problem?
 
After three days and nights of reading articles on the internet I have learned alot about the 6.0L diesel. I understand the electronic controls and fuel management, but, I have a few questions.
1. Is it true that the 6.0L turbo produces boost quicker than the older 7.3L turbo, and does this make the stock 6.0L quicker to accelerate than the stock 7.3L?

2. How long should the turbo lag be from a dead stop?

3. I have poor jump off the line from dead stop (about 3-4 seconds). Could this be caused by the turbo veins being stuck open?

4. Should I see a decrease in acceleration if the VGT valve connector is removed. (It is my understanding that with the connector removed the veins are forced wide open).

5. Within reason (I'm not rich) what oil and coolant is suggested by the good folks on this forum. (Not the Ford answer)

6.0 produces boost quicker yes, thanks to the VGT technology. A stock 6.0 is a bit quicker than a stock 7.3 yes.

Turbo lag on a stock 6.0 is terrible, I'm not sure how anyone drives these things stock hahaha. Do you have black smoke at any point? What PSI are you seeing on the dash?

If the VGT is bypassed or not functioning, your truck will be a complete turd and will spew smoke (not in a good way by any means).

Oil you'll get all sorts of answers. Favorites seem to be Amsoil 15-40, Rotella synthetic and standard blends, Valvoline extreme blue 5w-40, and probably a few others. Coolant, drain, flush and use CAT ELC coolant, it's a ton better and I think it's even cheaper, and it is made to last up to some ridiculous amount of miles.

I can't stand driving a truck that could get you killed pulling out in traffic. I definatelly want a better initial acceleration. Nothing crazy just a peppy get up and go. So now I guess the long journey starts.
I don't have a boost guage. But, I'm going to get one.

oops didn't see you had an 04, so yeah no boost gauge.

Just an SCT with some custom tunes will wake that thing up a LOT. Just run a street tune.

If you're mechanically inclined, you can clean that Turbo and have it spooling up very quickly. Did it to my turbo and I am extremely impressed. Heck I'm so impressed I might have to sneak up to Mdub's neighborhood and give him a run for his money!!! I doubt that though as it's still too chilly up their. My beer would probably freeze before I got their.:c:

Are you riding in the bed? :tttt:


And OP an intake and exhaust will help with turbo lag. But custom tunes on an SCT Would be your best bet.

What is SCT exactly. Is it a term or brand or what?

Its a brand of a programmer. You load custom tunes, sent to you via email from a company, onto your programmer and then plug the programmer into your truck and load the tune and viola! Best ride you've EVER taken in your truck. :rocking:
