It likely depends on where you get inspected but...

Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles

Virginia State Police - Safety Division

From the websites above, it looks like you are on the hook for a visual emissions test.

Ya i know they dont do much more than visual. Figured if maybe i took it to some backwoods garage they wouldnt know what to look for. Thats kinda what im bankin on

Yeah I think almost every state has some sort of visual. It's a federal law not to tamper with emissions stuff. Just have to know which garages don't care. As long as it doesn't have to get smogged (which is primarily a california thing) then you should be fine. I'm willing to bet a LOT of garages will have no idea what to look for, especially if they don't work on diesels a lot.

I'd bet most state inspectors wouldn't work that hard to find it.

IMHO they eventually will. Some how or another someone in power will catch on to what we are doing and the crap will run down hill fast. I know AZ is looking for EGR valves and coolers.

no most places won't bother very hard to look for anything:tu:

The obvious look is the cat after that trying to find the EGR on EVERY make and model vehicle is too tedious.

Think about it, I mean there are little shops all over the US that hand out inspection stickers every day without doing a full inspection. My truck never even made it into the bay of the garage. They scanned the old sticker, put the new one on, I was on my way.

The new laws sound intimidating and just gut wrenching, but think about it, there will still be those shops. Sure if you have to plug it in, it will be more of a hassle, but with some work, you can take a heavy modded truck and detune the hell out of it to pass a smog test of some sort. There will always be ways around the rules.
