any reason why my fuel milage is better in tow haul mode?

Different shift points could be keeping your transmission from slipping as frequently which would waste energy. This would be valid if you were driving in the city with lots of speed changes. The electronic gauge is also not the best measure of fuel economy either. I'm guessing on the transmission slip in frequent speed change situations.
