Help Me Tune Up This Ford 6.0

I have never messed with a stroke but maybe its time to do so.

2004 Stroke 6.0 has injector problems now so an injector purchase is necessary.........with that being said this would also be a great time to make a power upgrade...............whats a good injector for this truck when ya run the stock turbo

also what else is needed to make the truck better

Diesel Dawgs Performance 10-15-2007 09:09 PM

Get a good intake, 4" Exhaust and an SCT Tuner.

With the above on my 04 6.0 I made over 440 hp on the Dyno no other upgrades. It was fast for nothing more than a tuner.

Whit 10-15-2007 09:15 PM

cool.....so this tuner is a program download or is it a chip.............sorry for the ignorance but the whole Ford thing is new to me

Diesel Dawgs Performance 10-15-2007 09:18 PM

Its the Best Programmer money can buy for the 6.0 Strokers.

Whit 10-15-2007 09:20 PM

so you just dowload the program thru the dataport????

Diesel Dawgs Performance 10-15-2007 09:22 PM

Yup.....

165CC injectors is about it with custom SCT tuning and a stock turbo. Any larger and you are going to need a turbo to make the smoke go away.

Whit 10-15-2007 09:24 PM

EGT's and head gaskets are OK with this setup?

YMMOT 10-15-2007 09:25 PM

I'd do studs.... It is not a matter of if, it is more a matter of when.

I would also look into a regulated fuel return system.

Whit 10-15-2007 09:27 PM

fuel delivery is OK or does it need help

What ya mean on regulate fuel return?

YMMOT 10-15-2007 09:29 PM

Here is a description of a vendor's system out there:

This is our regulated return system. This kit is designed to supply Stage 1 or Stage 2 Injectors, but is also beneficial to trucks with stock injectors and aggressive tuning. Fuel supply volume from the factory filter housing is increased by replacing the restrictive banjo bolts and lines with larger full flow fittings and braided steel hoses. Pressure is controlled by an auxiliary fuel pressure regulator. Fuel no longer dead-heads at the back of the cylinder head but is now circulated through the head, out to the pressure regulator and then back to the fuel tank. This system ensures that new fuel is constantly flowing to the injectors and is continually purging air from the fuel system. Included in the Stage 1 kit are Full-flow Stainless Steel fittings, Stainless Steel braided supply and return lines, Aeromotive pressure regulator (which comes with a 2 year warranty), regulator mounting kit, and our custom billet adapter to ensure a clean appearing install. We use Stainless Steel fittings because they have larger passages than steel fittings.

cool........makes sense now

sounds like a manditory thing to me having experienced the Cummins lift pump issues

Diesel Dawgs Performance 10-16-2007 12:38 AM

Headgasket was fine for 60K miles on my 04 with the SCT Extreme Race Tune. EGT's were very controllable. Never had one problem with my truck.

Diesel Nut 10-16-2007 12:05 PM

If you have to do injectors, do studs while you are there. You have alot to tear apart to do injectors, studs are right there. I have heard a few guys say they can be done without pulling the cab. This will keep the headgasket in place. the 03-04 trucks are the ones most prone to head gasket problems. Some last with a substantial amount of power, some blow with stock power. Play it safe.

As for tuning, Lukes' is dead on. SCT. Best you can do for a Ford.

YMMOT 10-16-2007 01:49 PM

Here is a thread where a guy did it without taking the cab off...

Replacing studs on a 6.0

I've also heard of people one for one replacing the bolts with studs with some success also. That is assuming your headbolts haven't already stretched

Studs
SCT
Injectors
Regulated fuel return
4"Exhaust

That should be good for pretty close to 450+ Corrected WHP.

My truck with JUST a Quadzilla 160 and Zoodad put down a corrected 418 WHP. Uncorrected was 376.

Whit 10-16-2007 06:40 PM

good info here men.........I will go over this tonight with him and see where this takes us

LOGANSTANFORTH 10-17-2007 09:49 PM

you can just take front core support mounts out, and loosen the back 4 so they are about to fall out and jack it up as high as possible and you should be able to get the studs in, if the gaskets are good just do it one at a time so you dont have to worry about loosing the seal, thats what i plan on doing when i stud my cummins and 7.3.

OneBadBia 10-18-2007 07:40 PM

Look into DIY injectors you can either buy a complete injector of buy a kit to re build and upgrade your stock injectors. I believe they make them for 6.0's I know for sure its for 7.3's because my husband just did theses in his truck. He bought the kit to re build his and says that if he did it over again her would have just got the whole infectors. It took him a long time cant remember exactly how many hours but it was long and depending on your expereince with these trucks it can take a whole day, one guy reported taking something like 23 hours I think my husbands was around 10 hours and thats including letting the truck cool down.

I agree the SCT is a great buy for those trucks a buddy of mine have a 6" lift, 37's, intake, exhaust and the sct on his truck and is running a 13.9. And has had no problems out of it.

For what its worth my 04' 6.0 work truck has a set of Elite-Diesel 55 hp injectors in it. I have had great luck with them. They have been in for about 25k miles with no issues and stock charger. Truck starts and idles better than it ever did before. Truck now has about 130k on it.

Mdub707 10-27-2007 11:11 AM

To do the studs correctly, you must pull the heads off of the truck. They can be put in without removing the heads doing them one at a time, but will not hold as well, or at least isn't the "correct" way to do it, from what I've read, and I've done a lot of researching on this.

Whit 10-29-2007 07:28 PM

well the kid is still drivin the truck with what I think is a bad injector.........................I guess as long as it runs he will continue to drive it.....................he says it aint runnin tooo good at all and hills take him downn to 45 mph..............................but I cant get him to park it of get it worked on :argh::argh::argh:

he has 110 miles on it so its out of warrenty and also his injectors buzz for 30 seconds after key off so he has the latest ecm load

is he gonna loose a cylender over this???

Diesel Dawgs Performance 10-29-2007 08:18 PM

There is really no way to know exactly whats wrong with it until you get it checked out. If it was my truck it wouldn't be driven at all. Any Codes?

YMMOT 10-30-2007 01:02 PM

The injector buzz was one of the ECM updates that was done to help cycle the injectors after shut off. It was supposed to extend the life of the injectors. I believe there was a ECM update after that, because of the complaints that were received.

A stuck open EGR will do weird things. Might consider pulling it out and cleaning it.

Gotta love the "drive 'em 'till it won't move no more" crowd. Makes a $300 fix become a $3,000+ repair bill down the road.
