Oil Leak?

Just got into an 07super with 20000mi. Spotless truck "BUT" i found a small amount of oil dripping from the lower oil pan.

Ques.- Are these trucks known for connection problems (ie. leaks) where the upper and lower oil pans meet?

Lange503 08-11-2010 11:27 AM

my 05 didn't? check the gaskets etc. could just be as simple as a new gasket is all, my 05 had almost 100,000 when i let it go, never had one leak...

Think i found the problem!!!!

Front of the trans. where it bolts up to the flywheel, there is a rubber grommet. It appears this grommet is to serve as an inspection hole? Oil seems to be coming from this area so would that tell me that I have a rear main leak possibly?

Lange503 08-12-2010 04:02 PM

honestly i don't know on that one man, :humm: i wouldnt think it would leak but hell who knows

newman 08-12-2010 08:13 PM

It could be a rear main or a bed plate. Is it just a once in a while drip or does it mark its territory every night?

coming from gromet in lower portion of bell housing? trans input seal???

spelt22000 08-13-2010 10:23 AM

I would call it my bell housing.. Definatly not the bed plate.. Never had this gromet on any other truck i've had in the past.

Tranny bolts up to fly wheel and at the bottom of the "tranny plate" is where the gromet is. Directly behind the lower oil pan. Gromet is approx. 3" wide and 2"tall.

The drip is very very slow. only is present after i run the truck. doesn't leave a footprint anywhere but forms a drip at bottom of trans that looks like it could fall at any time but doesn't.

Where it's located tells me i have a rear main leak but it's not totally obvious like it wouldv'e been with my other trucks.
Going on a three hour run today so i will see if it gets heavier with a longer run and report back..

My truck had a drip hanging from the bell housing its entire life. I never saw a spot on the ground so I didn't worry about it.

It could be a rear main seal, that is leaking. With the engine running, remove the oil fill cap. If you see a cloud of oil vapor exiting and can feel air comming out from a few inches away you probably have "blow-by". That's a condition caused by high pressure gasses leaking past the piston rings when the engine is running. When that occurs it usually destroys the rear main seals and there just isn't much that can be done short of a replacment engine. Rear main seals can also go bad for other reasons.

Also, intake gasket end seal leaks can leak oil in the same way with the same diagnosis- rear main seal-NOT. Start repairing oil leaks from the top of the engine down. Gravity complicates things sometimes. Things are not always as they appear.

Ok i got one for all of you. My 04 has a leak that looks to be comming from rear passenger side of the motor. The funny thing is when i start the truck and drive it for a few mins and shut it off it leaks about 1/4 to 1/2 a quart in about a 10 min period but if i start it and drive it for about 20 or 30 mins it only leaks about 5 to 10 little drops and thats it. What do you got for that?:humm:

For what it's worth I've never seen with my own eyes a 6.0 that didn't have the wet bellhousing. Mine has had it since I bought it with 14,000 miles on it. It is wet, but never seems to drip so Ford wont fix it under warranty anyways.

Jasonshort the ICP sensor is up in that area and is known to leak. Can you get a picture up in there for us or try and describe where it seems to be coming from better?

jasonshort 08-24-2010 04:50 PM

Ok so i just replaced the icp sensor and if i think about it really hard, that is rite around the same time it started leaking really bad. Hmmmmmmmmm could it be that easy?

Mdub707 08-24-2010 05:12 PM

haha, possibly!:pca1:

jasonshort 08-25-2010 04:51 PM

I guess i will have to reach up in there and see if it has a bad seal

I had a leak once and it took awhile to find it, but thanks to a great diesel tech. mech., he found out that it was the oil cooler itself. By replacing the oil cooler kit did not stop the dripping but the whole cooler has to be replaced. Dry as a bone now. Been over 3 three months now.

I own a 03 6.0 litter for 6 year's know and it never leaked oil . I was cleaning the moter bay last week and my dog was running around and jumped into the truck.so I said lest's go for a ride. so I stated it up to let it warm up and I just happen to see some type of leak. thought it was water from cleaning . so I looked closer . under the truck and on the drive way looked oily . so I thought it was dirt an oil an dirty water . NOT it was dupping all the oil out !! aleast a gallon . still had good presure cut it off /. need help some one said the ICP sensor? can any one help . it's up for sell and have people calling but the leak . can't sell like that.:scare2::scare2:

Mdub707 03-04-2011 02:49 PM

Well what area of the motor is the leak coming from? Try and locate roughly where it is and we can probably help.

jasonshort 03-04-2011 09:00 PM

oil leak

well i finally found the leak on my 04 6.0l. The icp senser is leaking, the oil cooler is shot and my egr cooler has a crack in it. At least i found it all before the head gaskets blew. Lucky me right.
