Check Trans Temp

Going down the road back to the house the Tow Haul and trans light come on and the read out said to check trans temp. Stopped and checked fluid, alittle low, so topped it off. While i was setting there at idle and adding the fluid the lights went off. So got back on the road and noticed the temp. hand was reading normal then it all of the sudden dropped out and went to below cold like it would be if it was not warm. And again the lights and read out started back saying to check trans temp.

Any body know or ever had this happen before? Debating on what to do next.

This is just a guess, but I'm thinking bad wiring or bad sensor. Surely the temperature is not changing that fast.

What gauge are you using to read this?

The factory gauges and read out on the truck.

How else would you check trans temp if it is not showing on factory gauge? I know if i had a after market Edge with the screen i could see the actual temp.

I didn't know a factory tranny temp gauge existed, that's why I asked. The stock gauges are all but useless. They literally just float in the middle between hot and cold when they're at normal temps. If it exceeds a certain temp, it will peg and you get the warning lights. I know this is how the oil temp gauge works, so I would assume the transmission one would be the same. It's almost a joke. Maybe get an aftermarket tranny temp gauge? They're VERY easy to install. THe 5R110 is set right up for it.
