where do I find a HPOP stainless steel screen

OK so I've got everything together for the EGR delet project on my 04, BUT!!! I cannot locate the stainless steel screen for the HPOP from the oil filter/cooler. Ford says they don't have one, only the plastic one, Bullet proof only has the special one for their cooler relocation kit? and I can't see one in BD's line up? any thoughts or suppliers who would carry this last part of my puzzle. Also are there any suprises I'll find when I tear into this thing, any thing to watch out for, I'm assuming that all of the fastners are metric...no problem there..I'm in no hurry to finish this thing I'm giving my self a week of after work nights to do it I'm doing the EGR delete, new upgraded oil cooler, de-soot the turbo and intake, new belts and hoses, cooling system flush, fresh tranny fluid and filters, and an upgraded fuel pump pressure spring. that should be a good service for the summer.

Never heard of one? Did someone suggest one to you? Have you had issues with the stock plastic setup? I know there are 1000hp trucks running the stock plastic ones....

HeavyAssault 06-03-2010 07:46 PM

Wasn't that an update from Ford?

Mdub707 06-03-2010 11:12 PM

well are we talkin about the screen material or the border that holds the screen? I thought all of them were plastic border with stainless mesh screen?

doin my own 6.0 06-04-2010 09:26 AM

the one that I saw was made from stainless frame and mesh. I've seen the plastic ones rip the mesh from the plastic frame. just wanted to remove a potential problem, I only want to do this project once thats why I've taken my time getting everything together for this, this being the third time it's been taken apart for EGR stuff I want to make sure it's the last....I hope. it looks pretty straight forward to do the EGR delete but I don't know if there are any tricks or things to watch out for when I do this... I can use the stock screen and probably sleep good at night.... but.. if I could find the steel screen I'd probably sleep better..lol I plan on doing the lake powell thing a couple of times this summer, and it's a long haul from my home (about 750 miles one way) across the hot desert..so I'm being cautious and taking no chances. but like HEAVY ASSAULT said I too thought it was a ford upgrade?? no biggy I'll keep looking. thanks guys

Diesel Powered Rocket 06-04-2010 02:51 PM

I've only seen the Ford upgraded part 3C3Z-6C83-AB which is stainless mesh with a plastic edge. I haven't see one of these fail like the nylon screen stock version.

BPD

Bullet Proof shows it on their site. IIRC all of the Ford ones will be the new upgrade.

I have seen the new screen fail:argh: so its not a fix all but it is a improvement over the plastic screen:humm:

Thanks guys I just ordered it from BPD, it's abit cheaper then ford. I guess that was what I was looking at.??? I thought it had a metal frame as well. does any body have any suggestions for a home diagnostic scanning tool, I'm looking for a good used one that will cover 04 thru 07 on multiable brands, my 04 ford and my wifes 07 jeep. it seems that I can find scanning tools up to 05 coverage on ebay. I did find a new unit from SUN to cover what I'm looking for but it was a bit spendy? any suggestions would be great.

I have Auto Enginuity(sp) and it does the job. I'm not sure if I would buy it again though. Maybe its because i don't really know how to use it.:argh:

Are you able to trouble shoot codes on different vehicles and different years? also can you reset the computer (turn off the check engine light). nowadays you need some thing like this to even think about working on the computer controlled stuff. I've never heard of auto enginuity before? I guess there for diagnosing sensors thats all you need. I've never had any experiance with the scanners to trouble shoot so I don't know good from bad as far as they go, or what operations that they perform. any insite would be good.

Mdub707 06-10-2010 11:26 AM

You actually can data log quite a bit with a handheld SCT and a laptop. I've done it numerous times. The auto-engenuity is actually quite a bit better than that though, you can do injector buzz tests and contribution tests with it, which to me is worth it alone. You can get it for around $385 if I remember right.

doin my own 6.0 06-11-2010 09:37 AM

not bad.... whats a contribution test?.. my check engine light came on after I disconnected my EGR solinoid last month, the check engine light comes on and off on my wifes 07 jeep the dealer says there are not any problems and gets no trouble codes when they hook up their computer? so I'd like to get a scanner to see for my self whats going on. where can I locate the auto enginuity or sct so I can read up on them. to see whats what.

Mdub707 06-11-2010 10:16 AM

SCT is just the programmer, but reading codes is just a good side benefit.

Here's the autoenginuity...
AutoEnginuity® - OBD2 Scan Tool - Professional PC and PDA Diagnostics

I believe contribution and buzz tests are just different sayings for the same test. When you turn the key in the morning and hear the "buzzing" that is your injectors. You can use the autoenginuity to go through and buzz individual injectors to actually pinpoint if you have one that is acting up. I've thought about getting it. Looks like a nice package. My only concern is not knowing how to use it properly! Seems like there is a LOT of stuff you can test.

thank you I just put it into my favorites so I can read alittle more about it this weekend. it looks like it will cover all my concerns?

twinboys 06-11-2010 04:10 PM

A contribution test shuts off one injector at a time and measures how much is needed to compensate. Then it compares those numbers to identify any that did not need (much)compensation. As in nothing to compensate for if it is already dead. Atleast this is how it works on a 7.3.

Thanks for explaining it!:tu:

cool hopefully I won't need that option, but the idea of troubleshooting my truck and my wifes car sounds appealling. the sct looks pretty cool but it's only for the truck, altough monitering my EGT's and water temp along with all of the other neet stuff it does sounds pretty good too. thanks for the input.

You can still datalog other vehicles with the SCT as far as I know. There are tons of options on there, and clearly some of them are not for diesel trucks, which tells me you should be able to do any other vehicle. It might be Ford specific only.

Also the autoenginuity for the trucks, you will want to get the "prolink data connector" in order to take full advantage of the 6.0 readings.

There is also something known as the "Ford bundle" that you can get with it. Not sure what it entails, just know I've read about it.

doin my own 6.0 06-17-2010 08:47 AM

I thought the SCT was a unit that mounts to the dash? or is it hand held. how does the programing work to be able to use it on two different vehicles, from what I understand the auto enginuity has several different programs already installed into it? I'm open I haven't bought anything yet,... so I'll keep doing my home work. thanks for the info.

Mdub707 06-17-2010 10:55 AM

The livewire from SCT is dash mount. The handheld units they sell now are the Xcal3 which holds three custom tunes only, and the SF3 which holds 3 canned tunes and 3 custom tunes.

You can only program one truck at a time, but you can still use it to datalog without issue.

Don't get me wrong, the autenginuity would be far more advanced and is sure to be able to get you more info, but the SCT can actually access quite a bit.
