EGR Burning coolant

I was wondering if I unplugged my egr valve if it would quit burning the coolant as much?

jbrown1132 01-01-2010 06:07 PM

i don't know if that will do anything to stop the coolant leak, but if your not running a tuner that will block codes, you'll start throwing codes if you unplug the egr. are you sure it's not a head gasket?

by the way, :hellox::hi:

Definetly do not unplug the erg cooler. That will not make the ECM happy. If anything I would delete it and get a tuner to keep it from throwing codes.

Yea I know it isnt my head gasket I have a edge box on there but I am putting the banks six gun on it today. I have been told that some guys have had there egr unplugged for 100,000 miles and it didnt do anything to there truck. What wil it do if I unplug it?

as long as the banks sg blocks the codes, you should be fine.

I pulled out my egr and welded it closed put it back pluged it in i still throw 1 code but with no effect on performance:tu:

Where is the egr located is it on top of the motor because whatever that is I just replaced it.

sandfley3208 01-02-2010 08:18 PM

Its about 2" around and 2" long has a flat plug on it located just behind the intake elbow

04redstroker 01-02-2010 10:37 PM

How are you sure its not the heads? Unplugging the EGR wont stop the leak in the cooler.

sandfley3208 01-02-2010 11:03 PM

It very well could be head gaskets. I was just more talking about disabling the egr valve wich will keep the egr cooler cooler and not soot up the intake manifold with out throwing a check eng light.

When you say its burning coolant, is it just loosing coolant and you can't see a leak? Is your truck puking? Is there white residue all over the underside of your hood?

powerstroke7 01-03-2010 11:24 AM

I took it to a diesel shop not to long ago and they said that it looked liked it was my egr valve, they said it more than likely is not my head gasket bc it would be spraying coolant all over my hood. But what it is doing is losing coolant fast I mean I have to refill it about every 2 weeks now and I did notice one time when I was letting my truck warm up it was leaking down onto the ground.

BC06PSD 01-03-2010 11:54 AM

If you pull your egr valve and it is wet, then most likely its your cooler. Get an full egr delete kit and be done with it. Much cheaper in the long run. PM me.

powerstroke7 01-03-2010 12:22 PM

I just started my truck up to try and see were this thing was leaking and it is leaking by the passenger side manifold not coming from the manifold but around there. Is that were the egr is located?

BC06PSD 01-03-2010 12:25 PM

No, the egr valve is located on the top front of the engine.

powerstroke7 01-03-2010 12:49 PM

I think the mechanics were wrong it is bubling from my manifold. I think that would be my head's wouldnt it or is it the gasket? What do you guys think this could be since it is bubling around the manifold??

If youve been driving around with a leaky EGR cooler there is a good chance that you have also lifted your heads, thats what happened to mine. Previous owner had been driving around with leaky EGR and 1 1/2 weeks after i bought it the cooler completly let go and they found that the HGs where bad also, most likely from the added pressure of the coolant being burned (words from dealer). Anyways other stuff was damaged and i got a new motor under warrenty.:rocking: I would take it to another shop. Also, like I said, Just unplugging the EGR wont fix your problem it will still leak and exhaust still enters the cooler.
