blwn head gasket..surprise surprise

05' f250 6.0 w/115k miles - only modifications...K&N cold air intake and 4" MBRP turbo back w/cat delete & muffler delete

Blew white smoke for miles like spyhunter...Already blew my head gasket at 105k miles, had it repaired (didnt know about switching the head bolts w/ studs)

so here i am again, my question is i'm going to order new head studs within the next couple of days..the site i'm looking on has ARP studs for $475, but then they have ATS studs for $747......why such a price difference?...is it worth paying for?

Should i replace anything else while the guts are out on the doctors table?
(in saying that, it's not like money is no object....ive about had it dumping $$ into her)

any help would be greatly appreciated

maybe do the EGR delete why you have it all tore down, and go with ARP they're tried and true, the ATS ones your just paying for the name.

Sounds like at 10k miles, perhaps the heads are warped.

I'd use the ARP studs - I've had nothing but good luck with them.

Make sure they are re-sealing the injectors while they have them out.

Make sure they are changing the rockerbox gaskets, too.

The arps are fine, especially on a stock truck. Get the heads decked and checked for flatness. Do an egr delete while your there also.

I wouldn't deck a 6.0 head, personally. There's only .018 clearance from the exhaust valve face to the deck surface of the head, on a stock head.

It's been done, but it's something that I try and avoid, personally.

Big-angry.... that being said what is a 6.0 owner to do with "warped" heads other than to keep replacing headgaskets every 10K miles?

Big Angry Hillbilly 08-21-2009 06:33 PM

Replace the heads.

You oughta see the warpage spec and measurement procedure we've got to follow to check the heads when we've got 'em off.

I'd say 7 out of 10 sets of head gaskets I do require head replacement due to warpage or cracking.

WOW.... do the autoparts stores offer re-manned heads yet? is the dealer the only place to get these and what is the average price to expect to pay for the set of "new" heads.... BTW that is the bottom part not the rockerbox or is that included in a new head?

Big Angry Hillbilly 08-21-2009 06:48 PM

JUST the bottom part. Comes with valves and springs, yippee.

I have seen several ad's in Diesel Power and others for ready to go heads, I'm not sure where they're getting them from, or how they are reconditioning them. Last ad I saw had fire-ringed heads for like $799/ea exchange.

If I recall correctly, price on them is roughly $1600/head. I have some pricing info out in my truck, I will grab it later on and see what they are worth retail. I may be wrong though.

For the most part - the ones I am doing are under warranty.

I just found out....it's not my head gasket...it's my egr cooler....i assumed it was the head gasket cuz of the white smoke and anti-freeze in my oil......which is a mixed bag for me....i'm happy that it's not going to cost as much (like half), but in the same token i keep on replacing crap.......enough already.....but thank you to those of you who responded with some good info for me.......my new issue is to do the egr delete or not...my mechanic seems to think that i should keep it the way it is and just make sure that i stay on top of cleaning the egr valve (i think thats what you call it)

Opinions?

*clarification
