05 6.0

a good friend/roommate of mine just got a 05 6.0 lariat 4dr fx4 drw I was wondering if there is any thing we should look out for it has around 60,000 miles and seems to be sound and well maintained. well thanks in advance  I will post up some pics of the new rig soon.

Yeah, I would check the ball joints real well. If they have not been changed, plan on doing that within 20k or so. Other than that, change all the fluids, and have fun with it.

sweet thank you sounds like it should be a pretty good truck then.

i did the ball joints on mine just recently - thought they were rattling but it turned out they were still good. 70k miles on them but looked like they would not have made it to 100k.
Cost alot to have them done so if you have the ability to do those yourself, its about 250 fer parts i think. Labor is around 300-400.

Good point there.
Check for oil leaks or course and change ALL the fluids. tranny, diff, transfer case....everything. Even if you know the tranny was changed on time at 30k miles, its time again.

Did you by chance get an OASIS report from the dealer?
This will tell you EVERYTHING that was done to the truck.

toy4xchris 07-02-2007 01:16 PM

I dont think he got the report but he is kinda seeing the sales chick that sold it to him so she might be able to get it for him. other than that thank you guys for the info I will have him check all the stuff and we do have the ability to change the ball joints and stuff so I will make sure to take a look.

Take it to a shop that has a hot flush machine for the transmission. The torque converter has a 165° thermostat so the new fluid should be heated to 170°. Just behind the radiator there is a bypass filter which looks like a very small roll of toilet paper and needs to be replaced. The filter should be pushed up into place and the housing filled with fluid and slowly pushed up over the filter. Take care removing the filter housing because too much torque will break lines and the housing. Use an impact wrench set just hard enough to lightly tap the housing and it will come off but don't try the gorilla approach. The transmission uses Mercon SP while the transfer case uses mercon 5. There is no real need to drop the pan unless you are just curious as to what a large mesh screen looks like.
