6.0 Liter Blues

My friend has an 03 6.0 with 68,000 on it. His check engine light came on during a road trip. The truck ran fine at that point. Then it started surging on him a few days later and then proceeded to die. He let it sit for a few minutes, fired it up and would get 3 or 4 miles down the road and it would die again. Took him about an hour to get 15 miles to his house. He doesn't have a code reader which makes it dang near impossible to diagnose. He said it acts like it's running out of fuel. The lift pump is coming on when the key is turned on but he can't tell if it's running when the truck is. He dropped the fuel tank and checked the screen on the pick up, made sure the feed line to the lift pump wasn't plugged, and did a complete service on it before any of this started. For all intents and purposes he lives in Mayberry, USA so it's 80 miles to the Dealership or a code reader. Does anybody have any ideas?:pca1:

If the lift pump goes out on the 6.0 you can take out your injectors

Yeah, I'm sure it's not good whatever it is. I'm betting it's an EGR issue but without a code reader a guy could guess til he passed out.

There is no "lift pump" on the PSD's period. Only a fuel pump. It sounds to me as if you have an issue with your EGR valve, but without any codes to go off of thats about all I can guess at.

Yeah, I feel for the guy. He told me he didn't do any homework before he bought the truck and now he wish he had. At this point when he gets it fixed he's gonna go back to a cummins.:U:

LOL now thats funny right there I dont care who you are! I have a problem with my Ford, so Im gonna sell it a buy a POS Dodge. Ok Cummins is a good engine, IF they could get a transmission to stand up behind it. And let the lift pump in a Cummins go out. Can you say crate engine? Before busting his butt tearing the truck apart rent a friggin code reader! clean or replace the EGR, and put another 200,000 miles on the truck.

fuel pressure could be an issue but i would look at the codes first the the icp pressure it could be a high pressure oil problem
