Smoke,Smoke and more Smoke

New here, been reading post though. Here is my question:

2004 f250 6.0 diesel, I filled tank half way the other night then the next day (at a different station) filled up the rest of the tank and added about 8oz of Diesel Kleen. shortly after this my truck would run rough, then clear up. this went on for a couple of days. Yesterday driving home my exhaust (white) was pouring out like I was spraying for mosquitos. no noticeable power loss but a knocking noise and smoke. I parked truck did a couple Hail Mary's and have not touched it. A friend said sounds like an injector.

So is there a scan tool to tell if an injector is bad?
Or is this possibly something else?

Thanks for your input- Leo

Sounds like an injector to me also.

What color is the smoke? White smoke and it probably is an injector. The smoke will also smell like diesel fuel when it is an injector.

The best "value" for a code reader is to download ForScan Lite (to a smartphone) and buy an ELM327 OBDII adapter - WiF for iOS and BlueTooth for Android. I like the BAFX brand. ForScan is a VERY thorough code reader.

Do you still have a functioning EGR system? there were a couple of changes in 2004 (midyear) .... where is your ICP sensor located? The early 04's had a fairly reliable EGR cooler, the late ones had a weak EGR cooler. White smoke can also be coolant from a leaking EGR cooler.

smoke is white. and it has a fuel smell. I brought the truck last year and it already had the EGR delete. I'm not getting any check lights on the dash. Not sure of an ICP sensor

thanks for the quick answer

You can have quite a few codes without a CEL. ForScan can most likely identify the cylinder that has a problem. Don't keep driving it while it is dumping fuel, it can ruin that engine.

I have it parked, gonna try and tackle it this weekend. (or I could idle it in the driveway and have the best fog machine in the neighborhood):lol88:

Sometimes you can see which cylinder is dumping fuel by looking at the exhaust manifolds and looking for areas that are "wet" w/ fuel.

Injectors 2,4,6,8 are on the drivers side. Odd ones on the passenger side.

good idea. didn't think of that. Im scared to crank it. do not wish to do any major damage.

You can also remove the glow plugs and crank. Put a paper towel in front of each glow plug hole. You can see fuel shooting out if you have an injector dumping fuel.

Be careful though ........ the fuel will shoot out at a dangerous velocity. It can cause injury if anyone is in the way.

Just be aware that removing a glow plug harness isn't always easy. You can ruin the harness. If you have an early 04 engine, it will have the solid glow plug rails. They are easier to deal with,

Got it fixed.

Sorry so long to update. 2 injectors bad on pass. side. Friend recommended a diesel mech who "moonlighted" at home. replaced 2 injectors and glow plug harness .no more smoke. parts and labor 900.
feel pretty good about that.
