Crank No Start
 
I have not had a lot of diesel experience. I have had a '94 7.3 F350 for a couple years, and have a few issues that I have addressed on here.


A little of a week ago, I bought a 2003 6.0 F550 5 speed with a Lo gear.

I spent over an hour with a buddy checking it out. It is a work truck with a box on it. Everything I need for both my contractor businesses.

It drove great that day, and I filled up the tank the next morning, and drove all day, until I stopped at a Lowes for about 30 minutes. It kicked on, after a few seconds it dies, and never starts again. After the raping... I mean towing... I was home late and started researching.

No one good give me a straight answer on the crank no start scenario. I checked the water separator, and found some water. I replaced the fuel filters. No start. I replaced the oil filter and oil, no start. I bought a bluetooth scan tool, and the Torque app, which was able to monitor many things like the fact that my ICP was not registering oil pressure.

i didn't want to bare thinking about the $1000 high pressure oil pump I might need, so I jumped the gun and got a new ICP, which was a pain in the arse to reach, better get creative and make some tools for that if you come to that. It was oily and a sign of not working. But no luck.

In my frustration, I opened the oil filter housing and found that the filter was still bone dry from the day I put it in. I am getting no oil into the housing. So, I need Low oil pressure.

I am not really that experienced with these engines. So, I have no clue where to start to get to the low oil pump. I need guidance and as many pictures and visual aids as possible.

First check to see if the regulator is stuck, more on that later.
The low pressure oil pump sits inside a housing where the crank comes out of motor, first remove the fan to give you some room, then remove/loosen the belt, you have to remove the harmonic balancer the the couple of bolts that hold the oil pump cover on are visible, the gears will slide out but I believe on the 03 there is a collar that sits on the crank that will have to be removed first, some people get lucky and can slip that collar off while others are careful and cut through the collar using just a hacksaw blade/ only want to cut about halfway through then POP it with a chisel to get it off, be careful not to tough the crank during this whole process. when ou put the new gears in dip them in oil or put a small amount of grease on the gears so it will prime. also inspect the main housing for damage. BUT FIRST CHECK THE REGULATOR to make sure it is not just sticking, it looks like a large bolt head on an angle in the low pressure oil pump housing, be careful as it has a spring on it to regulate the oil pressure to 75psi, it will shoot out if not careful.

Thanks for this info. So, either way, i am taking the fan and harmonic balancer off, right? The regulator is in there too.

I am going to check it out as soon as I can.

you can get to the regulator without removing anything, so try that first.

Can you give me guidence on location of regulator and how to get to it. Also, how to check if bad?

thanks I hope it is something I can do without too much hassle.

im a contractor not a mechanic so I tell you how to fix your furnace or ac, but just get by on my truck

update on no oil
 
Removed regulator.... It looks in good shape as far as I can tell. I did order one in case.

Here is where I am at. I removed the regulator with a 12mm allen, and only about a tablespoon or 2 of oil came out! ... and it looks like old oil, but I changed the oil since this all started happening.

Are we to assume that my Low pressure pump is out? Anything I should check first? It seems that it is completely out, by that I mean it doesn't kind of work, or work sometimes, and there has been no oil pumping at all.

My question is, is the regulator after the pump? If not, it is something else blocking it. I just want to make sure I am going the right direction.

the regulator port is on the pressure side of the pump so when pressure reaches over 75psi it opens to bleed the excess pressure off, it does sound like the pump is gone.

The unfortunate update
 
We were able to use a 8in puller to get harmonic balancer.

Found the LPOP cover to have large grooves and scratches and the gerators were locked up and dinged up.

Buddy made a point to ask why this would happen. This is an important point before replacing parts without understanding the cause.

The shaft had a sleeve seal on it, which had to be removed to get the inner gerator out. It looks like there had been a groove that the sleeve was covering.

So, the upsetting thing is that there are huge grooves and dings in the housing. So, it looks like we are also changing the timing chain cover with the gears, cover, i bought the regulator just in case, and already changed the ICP because that was my first thought. So, i think we are done with possible problems. I didn't want to put it back together and ignore those grooves. The $300 tow isn't worth when I found the timing cover for $125 used on ebay.

My buddy is worried about the shaft being bent, but another buddy thinks it looks ok. Fingers crossed... cover to come in Tuesday.:argh:
