2004 Powerstroke 6.0 blowing black and white smoke. Need help.
 

Its a 2004 F250 6.0L SLT Supercab 4x4. 168,000 miles. Only mods I know of on this truck is a Sinister EGR delete and an aftermarket air filter. A little background info. This is my first ever diesel and I have had it for 10 months now. I was unsure about getting one with a 6.0 in it because of all the negative stuff I heard about them but this trucks runs great and was a STEAL so I couldn't pass it up. Anyways, its been running great since I have had it except a few small issues. First, since I've had the truck, it runs perfect up until I have 70 mph and then it seems like it hesitates. It gets kind of jumpy. Not to big of an issue. Next, let's say I come up to a spot where I need to cross a busy road and there are cars coming. From a dead stop I put the pedal to the floor and it takes like a full 2 seconds to get going and then it moves quickly. So that's what's been going on since I've had it but it's been a great running truck. But two weeks ago, I noticed a little black smoke coming from the exhaust. I thought no big deal. Over the past two weeks it has been getting worse and worse. And now, about three days ago, white smoke has been showing up and its getting worse. It smells like diesel so it must be unburned fuel. So I am wondering what can cause all this. Will a tuner fix this or is it injectors? I checked the oil and coolant and both a fine. nothing leaking from the engine or anywhere.

I also took the air filter off and let it run and it doesn't do anything to help it.

An update on my truck. The fuel mileage has gotten really bad. And the smoke is turning more white than black.

I had my ficm rebuilt when it went south. Ed put a 40 hp php tune in for me and WOW! Eliminated all hesitation from dead stop acceleration. I would resolve issue then add tune to get better drivability. It was done to the ficm, not a tuner, there is a difference. I'm wondering if you have a boost issue, turbo problem or blockage in tubes/ intercooler??? Check fuel pressure at the bowl too. Maintenance is critical on these trucks, is your oil fresh, good quality, and proper filters?

I am just going to have to bring it in to a shop and figure it out. I was told by someone else that they think it's a stuck or cracked injector. But I have seen videos of what that looks like and sounds like and my truck is not acting the same. Hopefully it's not too big of an issue.

Honestly, I hope it's the turbo and not injectors. Pricing out the cost, turbo is going to be way cheaper.

Took my truck to the shop yesterday. Closest one was 40 minutes away. I can't believe my town, which is fairly big, doesn't have a diesel shop. Anyways, initial assessment makes them think my truck has some worn out injectors. I have only had the truck 10 months and I don't know when or if that last guy put injectors in it so it seems logical to me. Once they call me to confirm what is wrong with my truck I will post back here again.

Seems like injectors to me, the smoke your seeing is prolly grey not white which is caused from injectors. BUT if you but in new injectors have the shop check the FICM voltage because if its too low it can also cause the same symptoms. The other concern is fuel pressure. Whenever you install new injectors you replace the fuel pressure regulator spring. (Blue Spring Kit) its a Ford update that is commonly overlooked and if untreated and your fuel supply pressure drops below 45PSI you will just keep eating injectors slowly one after another. The kit is only $65 and go's on the side of your fuel filter housing on top of the engine. Takes a whole 25 minutes to install.

Yeah so this whole process of getting my truck fixed at this shop has been a complete joke. The name of the place is Diesel Performance Specialists out of Laurel, MS. They are doing a horrible job of fixing my truck. They have had it since June 13 and are still working on it. After looking at my truck they just knew it was the injectors. After a couple of weeks, they finally start working on it. They sent off the injectors to get them tested and they said that three of them are bad. So the plan was to just replace the three because I plan to sell it later. After a couple of weeks I am wondering what the hell is going on. They said they are putting it back together and it should be good to go. After calling them twice a week and the time keeps getting pushed back I have just about had enough. I just got laid off and have to move back home and I don't have the time nor money to deal with this. Now they are saying that the injectors are in and they are test driving it and trying to get the smoke issue taken care of. Why the hell is it still smoking if the injectors were the problem?! So he said they are going to clean out the vains in the turbo and get it working right and hopefully won't have to rebuild it. Really?! It's a bunch of bullshit that they don't even know how to figure out what is wrong with a truck that they work on all the time. And he is probably going to try to get my to pay for everything that he has done even though he was wrong. Any advice up to this point anyone can give me?
