To buy or not to buy...
Coming from gas, currently i have an 05 F150 5.4 on 37's. Nice truck all around. But i need 4 doors and this ad caught my eye. After a conversation with him over email he is stating the following and i am not sure what to do. We would be trading one for one so no money exchanged.
I'm selling my Ford F250 that has a 6.0 powerstroke with ARP headstuds and EGR delete. This truck is a XLT model that has some accessories. ARP headstud kit Black Onyx headgaskets EGR delete 5in exhaust 6in tip Fuel Hostage 22x9.5 Nitto Terra-Grapplers 33x12.50 color matched bumpers and mirrors 08 tailgate Go Recon LED taillights Harley headlights Paramount Restyling Grille 25% window tint Kenwood double din DVD Back-up camera Phone activated hands free bluetooth Line-x bedliner This truck has a 200k miles on it. All power options work correctly. Runs and drives great. Then i asked him if it had any problems and he says this... I drive it everyday, drives great down the road. The tires will need replacing soon. Valve covers have some sepage, but I was going to replace the gaskets at the time of putting in bigger injectors. The check engine light is on due to the EGR being deleted. The paint is in great shape and wheels are new not a scratch or pitting or rash anywhere. It's alot of truck for the money. To me, it sounds like the injectors are about to go and it leaks oil from bad head gasket. what are your guys opinions? I can not afford to do anything to this truck, other than the tires later down the road. And wife would kill me if i needed to drop $$$ right off the bat. I do not want to be screwed over and there is nothing that a friend who knows about engines could say. Without popping the head to check, how else would i know if turbo is bad, this and that, etc etc.. Thanks for the help guys! i troll this forum often and hope the day comes sooner than later that i will be posting my own truck on here... |

I hear ford head gaskets only, others have not been reliable. The cel can be on from delete, most guys leave egr valve connected to harness and tape out of the way.

OK thanks. So just a head gasket which is a neoprene, none cork replacement. Probably doable in an hour or so? Nothing major that needs to go into a shop?
anything else on this that sounds off? i really wish i had more knowledge on Diesel's.. I guess that's why i am taking a friend. |
The guy is telling you the Black Onyx head gaskets are not good.
And this is not just a neoprene or cork head gasket. It's a compound gasket made of metal and other materials. Replacing it is not a 1/2 hour job...it's more like many hours of work. If you can't afford to put more money into the truck, this one is high risk. |
Thanks guys.. i actually had a friend pull a carfax on this today and has extreme Odometer fraud alerts. went from 211k to 67 to 82 and 90. all within a year... truck has been in every state.. not having a great feeling about this.
thanks for the help guys. |
Smart move,
There are many more out there to find. |
These things are very expensive to fix if you can't wrench on it yourself.
|
Like stated black onyx gaskets are known to fail. The 6.0 isnt very cheap to diagnose and fix if your not a mechanic.
