2006 f250 6.0 king ranch help!!!!

I just purchased a 2006 6.0 king ranch bone stock 220k and it seems to have a few issues.
1. Low power during acceleration and blowing black smoke
2. Feels like it is missing at cruising speed.
3. Rough idle during start up.
4. Feels like turbo is lagging.

So far I have
1. Replaced turbo. Unison ring looked a little warn
2. Checked boots,filters
3. Cleaned egr and tried running it unplugged

I can't seem to pinpoint my exact problem and don't want to spend a fortune with trial and error.

Have a scan tool?

bobfbigman 07-27-2013 09:59 PM

Test your FICM, there is a test procedure at top of 6.0 section. replace BOTH fuel filters if you haven't already then see how it does and then we can take it from there.

I have a scan tool no codes come up. I have access to a modis any suggestions on what to look for there?
Will test ficm tomorrow

Jlrossini 07-29-2013 07:24 PM

FML I tested the FICM today and red 48 and 48 so its good stumped now. any issues with having a bad program?

bobfbigman 07-29-2013 08:17 PM

Check the MAP sensor hose, it goes from the intake manifold to the MAP sensor located on the cowl right near the oil fill tube, it will run like crap without that hose hooked up, you should get a low boost code if your scanner is able to read all the codes.

SMOKE'N_SHACK 07-29-2013 09:26 PM

Check your exhaust back pressure at idle at 1500 rpm and at cruising speed. The specs should be available on here in 6.0 section if not do a quick Google search you'll find it quick. If ebp reading is high your turbo more specifically the vgt end of it isn't working correctly if it is reading low you could have an exhaust leak. Another thing worth a check although modus won't help terribly is injector check pretty sure modis only allows buzz test though.

Koeo and koer tests too

Jlrossini 07-29-2013 09:32 PM

Did koeo and koer test came back cylinder 5 and 7 fault then rescanned and came up cylinder 8 ??? Third time only low boost.just installed a new turbo with new Vgt no change.

If you have modis you can check injectors too. Put scanner in graph mode, Look at the pulses and its usually pretty obvious if they are not consistent. You can do injector buzz test too. With modis you can monitor ficm volts while driving. There are a lot of parameters you can check with graph on modis.

SMOKE'N_SHACK 07-29-2013 09:36 PM

Sorry misread earlier did you do a turbo relearn?

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

Good to know haven't had much time on modis mainly otc pegisys seems to have more in test mode

Jlrossini 07-30-2013 12:06 AM

I guess I should have mentioned to when I hooked up the modis it would not let me read injector psi.I could not get it to pull any running diagnostics. ? . That's what made me curious about possible program issues or the modis I was using did not have any updates for my truck. The modis is a pita. I did notice when I was looking at the ficm tonight it looked like it had some wrecking yard grease pen numbers on it. I just bought the truck and am wondering now if the ficm could be the wrong one and is not programmed for my truck.

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

? Turbo relearn? What's that? I did install a new turbo.

Adrenaline junkie 07-30-2013 06:22 AM

If you go into graph mode you can watch all 8 injectors firing on individual screens. If you watch pulses as its running you can see volts ramp up and firing. If one or two don't look like rest you probably have bad injector or harness. I would always get a fuel pressure check at test port on secondary filter on top also. It's easy and free once you have gauge. My first new fuel pump went bad in 3 months and made me crazy testing . . Reminded me basics first! I got cheap 100 psi gauge and fitting and that's plug for test port. Now I can pop hood and see if fuel is issue! Eliminate easy first!

Jlrossini 07-30-2013 01:11 PM

Well off to ford to just get it looked at. Figure the $150 bucks to figure this out may be worth it. As I was saying the modis would not let me do an injector balance test for some reason. I have never had a problem with any other truck that's why I was asking about ecu or ficm program issues. Kinda wierd how the modis won't let me test this truck.

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

Dealership says 4 injectors are dead and the others are dropping out says need new injectors..
.. Does that sound right

Adrenaline junkie 07-30-2013 08:33 PM

Like I said put modis in graph mode and u can see each injector firing while running . . It's pretty obvious if they are not working right!

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

The modis is only scan tool with 8 graph capability at once. . . You will bec amazed if u try it and it works while driving too!

bobfbigman 07-30-2013 10:55 PM

If they say it is a whole bank of injectors then it is most likely the FICM, it can test out to 48v and still be bad. it has happened many times where they change those 4 injectors then come back and say that the FICM is bad when that was the whole issue.

Jlrossini 07-30-2013 11:17 PM

Again my modis will not let me read the injectors. It boots me off like it is not talking to the ficm or ecu? I did the 2 tests on the ficm both read 48 using the meter. The dealership says 2578 are dead and the others are low. They said my ficm was fine and the turbo probably going bad to which made me question there diagnosis because I put a new turbo in 20 miles before i took it to the dealership. So it makes me wonder if my ficm is bad or is it my injectors. I may try to pull my ficm and open it and check the solder connections where they go bad. I also wonder if the ficm is wrong I did notice wrecking yard numbers on the case. Is there a different program for different models? Or all the ficm the same for that era.

bobfbigman 07-31-2013 06:45 PM

All the FICMs will work no matter what year you have, some might have different updates but they will all work. It also seems every time they update the programming you lose mileage. I would send the FICM out for repair, they also replace some of the parts that are known to go bad and once they do that it will be better then new, the test only checks the power side so you could still have a problem on the logic side.

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

If you were in the Maryland/Virginia area I would let you borrow a logic side to see if that is your problem.

Cant help but chime in here, Guys. Mine had very similar problems. I used the Modis' brother, the Solus. It will display an awesome cylinder contribution test in graph form, if you have version 10(?) or newer - so I found out - the expensive way.
If the scan shows bad injectors on both banks, it's entirely possible you have a couple of bad injectors. Mine showed 6/8 bad - from -20 - 35% on the contribution test. I replaced only the 3 worst ones - it ran great. A test after the injectors were replaced showed them all within 10%, so the REALLY bad ones were affecting the remaining good ones. The misfire and smoke is likely an injector hanging up.
I still wouldn't put a wrench to it until I'd checked both the fuel pressure and the injector harness for rub-throughs and chafing.
The dealer is likely recommending all 8 to cover his Butt so there are no come-backs.

Adrenaline junkie 08-01-2013 06:34 AM

I would try hot shot secret if you have injector issues. It won't fix broken parts but it will loosen sticky ones. It's a great way to clean inside engine too. Sometimes if they are just hanging up it helps. If your modis doesn't connect, you either have a blown fuse or bad connection on vehicle, a bad connector or bad key for modis. Usually if you get modis to connect you fixed your vehicle problem! Verify your modis will talk to a similar vehicle same year and make if possible. I had plenty of vehicle issues cause diag problems.
