Running rough, Dies, and No Power

Hi all,
my 2005 Excursion is really running badly. When under load it will huckup and sputter and if I hold into it, after a few seconds it will die.

Also, when accelerating and then lifting off the throttle and breaking, it will die.

I have getting 2 error code relating to the EGR valve.

I took it apart yesterday and cleaned it really well with some break cleaner, but its still running the same.

Can the EGR be the cause of my symptoms? Im wondering if its a stuck turbo. I can hear the turbo spinning....

Thanks for any help.
Eddie

I'd recommend doing the egr delete and new oil cooler. Start with the cheaper stuff first. Filters and fluids. Check the dipstick and see if there is any milky white stuff on the dipstick. If there is then you have coolant mixing with the oil, either from a bad egr cooler(prone to cracks) or bad oil cooler. you can also test the ficm( fuel inection control module). There are procedures for it everywhere and it's as simple as reading a pin with a multimeter. should read 48 volts, anything below 46 and it will cause running issues. Any smoke? when you pulled the egr valve and cleaned it was the soot on it dry or kind of gooey? how many miles? what i gave you is the best place to start without more info. Good luck

Thanks for the input. I had to change the thermostat a few days ago so I drained about 3 gallons of coolant and it looked fine, also it was not low. The oil doesn't appear to have any coolant in it.

The EGR was super dirty, but it was all dry black soot, nothing wet.

One of the EGR codes said the EGR was non-responsive.

Im looking into getting an EGR delete kit, are they hard to install? Im actually a decent mechanic, Im just totally new to diesels.

Thanks again for your help.

when you say it dies, do you mean it actually shuts off or just looses power?? a clogged egr will make it run crappy but it will still run, do you have any trouble getting it started when it is hot? no sense changing the oil cooler unless you know what the temp difference is between oil and coolnt. when you do a egr delete it would be the perfect time to rebuild the oil cooler though, it will be right there when the intake is off, the most important thing to add is a coolant filter to save the oil cooler.
I'm not sure if the EX has the new oil pump or the older HPOP, sound more like a high pressure oil leak or even a HPOP going bad/if it is the older style/ the newer ones tend to die instantly.

It actually dies.
