Block heater questions.

On a cold night, (20F around here is a cold night) how long does a block heater need to be plugged in?

Assuming it is only an hour or two, does anyone use a timer on the outlet they plug their block heater into instead of leaving it plugged in all night?

Thanks,

Keith

2-3 hours is about all that is really needed and yes a lot of guys set them up on timers.

Don't mean to start some crazy story but I have been meaning to ask if anybody thought it would make since that a block heater could start your truck on fire. A friend of mine lost his truck a 6.0 not sure what year it was maybe an 04 and a 25' proline that was parked next to it they thought that the block heater started it. We were thinking that the protected breaker would have tripped and it might be an ignition problem. Don't mean to scare anyone just a question.

It's electrical so I'd say sure it's possible that it could start a fire. Thank god for insurance. :c:

Yea he was able to get another truck but not able to replace his boat that was our overnight boat for offshore fishing. What a mess that was. Hell of a way to wake up at 4 am.
