So much white smoke

So on my way home today I took a longer route and I was watch the temp gauge. It would rise then drop and rise and drop. It finally got to knormal operating temp. I look down and it's on the rise. Then I got it up to about 2000 grand steady and noticed my heat finally kicked in. Any lower and it would go cold again. In my process of doing this I look out my rear view and I have never seen so much white smoke come from a vehicle in my life. I was amazed a vehicle could make that much. So I wa only a couple blocks from home. Coasted on into my drive way. I'm thinking my egr took a poo. It doesn't smell like diesel it smells like my usually diesel exhaust smell. If I crank it over more white smoke comes out. It doesn't smell like diesel super bad. I can breathe it in and it doesnt burn ir irritate my eyes or throat at all. Also as I turn it over I can hear a weird thumping noise. It's constant and has a steady beat to it. I'm pretty sure its the egr but it could also be head gaskets :argh: need some help from some good experience here please

Ps I pulled the egr valve and the bottom portion looks like someone just took a steam cleaner to it so now I'm 99% sure the it's the egr cooler

Sounds like failed EGR cooler to me. Don't drive it anymore until you get that fixed, it can hydrolock. Do the delete!

For a cheap fix, you can pull the cooler out and go have the ends welded up on it.

That was the plan. I've been told that, that way is the most reliable way to do it so the bellows don't snap. I pulled the oil cap and the bottom of it, there was a tiny little spec of a penut buttery look . I know that it's coolant on the oil. Would you worry about that? Im replacing the hpop fitting in a coupe days. Should I just make it a weekend project to inspect the oil pan and bearings as well?

If you actually have oil and coolant mixing, that would most likely mean a ruptured oil cooler.... Do you have oil in your degas bottle?

there was no oil in the bottle but also there was no colant in the bottle. im gonna dig into the hpop today to try and fix my hot start problem. and ill evaluate penut butter from there. 6 hours was long enough last night. definitley gonna polish the turbo and intake while its out and clean and polish it

So I broke into the hpop to look at my stc fitting to see if that's what's causing my hot start problem and I can't quite figure out if it's bad or not, it has a little bit of play to i. It will come out about maybe 1/16 - 1/8 of an inch but I can't get it to come out of the hpop itself. I called for and they have one for me. They want 30 bucks for it some gpfigured I'm already this deep into the motor may as well do it

Yeah, definitely go ahead and do it.
